Drug sniffer dog at school

Is this normal?
Got an e mail today saying they'd had a police sniffer dog in the school to routinely check for drugs yesterday.
DD doesn't seem to think this is out of the ordinary??
I'm actually a bit shocked! DD only started at this school for 6th form so I'm not sure if this is a regular thing or not. Pretty sure it never happened at her other school.

A couple of the boarding schools DH has worked at have had sniffer dogs drop into the boarding houses routinely. I think it's a good idea.

Nimbostratus100 · 10/02/2023 18:47

great idea, and happens at many schools

hangsangwitch · 10/02/2023 18:51

Used to happen about twice a year at the high school I worked at, part of the safer schools initiative. School management would get told a day or two before and other staff the afternoon before. Same thing with a knife arch at the gate a couple of random mornings.

Pretty standard and nothing to worry about.

StoneofDestiny · 10/02/2023 18:52

Excellent idea

StoneofDestiny · 10/02/2023 18:53

Should send one round Houses of Parliament

PAFMO · 10/02/2023 18:56

We have them round a couple of times a year. It's more for the scrotes outside the school gates pushing the gear. (channelling my inner Catherine Cawood there)

11112222 · 10/02/2023 18:57

I did think it was quite a good idea. I'd just not heard of it happening before. Could have done with a sniffer dog at DS's boarding school I suspect…..

We also have a knife arch at school a couple of times a year.

What a brilliant idea!

sorts the scums out.

Poor dogs would be exhausted!

mynamesnotMa · 11/02/2023 08:08

Brilliant idea

LlynTegid · 11/02/2023 08:45

Sensible even if unusual. Sad if there are any children who think it OK to support a trade where young black men are killed and others exploited, but a reality nonetheless.

Agree that the Houses of Parliament should also have this.

KangarooKenny · 11/02/2023 09:09

No different to having a metal detector at the entrance. It’s a good idea.

I haven't heard of metal detectors being used in UK schools, I think it's more a USA thing. My kids high school has had sniffer dogs in.

No, I’ve seen one

quiteathome · 11/02/2023 09:20

They have had them at my kids school. I think they have found kids with vapes and so on.

It is a good idea. I think it is part of the aim to find the county lines prevention strategies.

cata09x · 11/02/2023 09:24

Metal detectors are becoming more frequently used in schools in the UK due to the rise in knife crime. Numerous state schools around where I live have had them in place for 5+ years now.

Sniffer dogs are also common in both state and boarding schools, my boarding school had sniffer dogs come in at random points throughout the year to check for drugs.

Yes, I was going to say, quite apart from being “scum”, some of those in possession will be being criminally exploited.

Brilliant! Letting the staff know and giving them a chance to leave their gear at home!! 😂

Firkinhavinalaugh · 11/02/2023 09:49

It’s a brilliant idea - as a deterrent as well as finding things.

suppose it’s not different now to the intruder exercises they put in place at schools. Again, not nice but realistically a possibility and good to have the children aware.

would have thought the sniffer dogs opens up a world of opportunity for the wider discussion about drugs and criminal exploitation.

Vitriolinsanity · 11/02/2023 11:45

I was in a pub one night when the police brought the sniffer dogs in. Old pub, several open fires.

The problem was they walked the dogs in past the very large windows, so everyone had seen them.

By the time they got in the dogs were a pointless overkill because there was no disguising the stench of burning weed where all the punters had emptied their pockets into the fires.

Am I bad for thinking: What a fantastic idea!
🤔😮🤨😁
