To be terrified of the coming summer?

Last year there were 24,000+ heat-related deaths due to the heatwave, and the temperatures here were astronomical. It was the worst summer I've ever experienced, sweating constantly, sticking to every surface, always dehydrated, warm water coming out the cold tap, and sweating as soon as I stepped out of the bath. I also had a very unhappy, sweaty, screamy 1.5 year old!

AIBU to be absolutely dreading this year? Apparently the Met Office has claimed 2023 will have an even hotter summer. I don't know if I can bear it again. DP and I are thinking of booking a holiday just to be somewhere liveable. This is also the first winter I've actually enjoyed because of the relief from the heat.

Roughly where do you live? Move to Scotland! It definitely wasn't that hot here.

Mumsafan · 10/02/2023 07:53

I can only remember about 5 really hot days last year

Mychitchatdays · 10/02/2023 07:54

Yeah, move to West of Scotland.

BrutusMcDogface · 10/02/2023 07:55

I’m so cold right now I can’t even remember what it feels like to be hot 🥶

It seems bizarre to be dreading the summer already, but it would be tricky to book a holiday unless you’re planning to go away for three months?

why don’t you use the money to get yourself an air conditioning unit?

Sparklingbrook · 10/02/2023 07:56

i only remember a few days of extreme heat.

Yes I’ve just been and scraped the ice off my car to go to work. 🥶
I a more worried about it snowing in the next few weeks at the moment.

dollymixtured · 10/02/2023 07:58

As PP I’ve said there were very few extremely hot days. This is not a normal reaction to have in February with regards to thoughts about summer

Purplepepsi · 10/02/2023 07:59

We have an air con unit in one room. It's so good and we can all cram in there to sleep if we need to! We got it really cheap. It was only on for about a week though!

Smoky1107 · 10/02/2023 08:00

The south east was dreadful, I'm trying not to think about summer until it's here. Spent all of august longing for October!

Overthebow · 10/02/2023 08:00

Do you live in the Middle East? In the UK it really wasn’t that bad. A couple of weeks of hotter than usual weather but still not high high temperatures.

AnnaTortoiseshell · 10/02/2023 08:00

Guessing you must be in the South. It wasn’t too bad here, in the North, and I had a newborn. The room thermometer was red for a few days, but that was the worst of it. We live in an old house. Expensive to heat but stays far cooler in the summer.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 10/02/2023 08:01

Turn your heating off, get a fan? Seriously I don’t remember last year being hot.

Flamingogirl08 · 10/02/2023 08:02

I mean it was really hot for like 4 days so YABU

Nousernamesleftatall · 10/02/2023 08:02

No one knows what the weather will be like this summer.

maranella · 10/02/2023 08:02

It was hideous OP. I'm guessing you were in the south, as I am, and it was relentless wasn't it? I think if you're that badly affected it's worth considering moving as whether 2023 is better/worse than last year is a bit of a red herring - the hotter summers are here to stay and even if this one is cooler, we're going to get summers like that on a regular basis from now on.

midgemadgemodge · 10/02/2023 08:03

"Not too bad"
"Move north"

Sadly a lot of climate change is baked in and as you can see some don't even think it's serious

Although the high energy prices are helping I bet

ChannelyourinnerElsa · 10/02/2023 08:03

It was hot, for a few days. Im not sure it’s healthy to be dreading a few days of summer at the beginning of February.

Sapphire387 · 10/02/2023 08:03

Come on, now. Yes it was boiling here in London. For less than a week. Bit melodramatic.

Notplayingball · 10/02/2023 08:03

🤣🤣🤣 so it's nothing like that in Scotland. Move to somewhere cooler then.

007DoubleOSeven · 10/02/2023 08:06

It was definitely more than few days of stupid heat in South East.

Op I bo

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 10/02/2023 08:06

I loved it- but tbh it wasn’t unbearable except for maybe 5 days. Shade, get out early, lots of water no probs

rothbury · 10/02/2023 08:06

Where do you live OP?

I am in SE England and yes we had about a week of very high temperatures. I bloody loved it but clearly you didn’t.

If it troubles you to this extent then can you get air conditioning fitted in key areas, rather than booking a holiday to Alaska?

Onwayoutsoon · 10/02/2023 08:06

I wouldn’t take any notice of any predictions for a heatwave this summer if you’re in the UK.

They didn’t predict last years one until it was pretty much on top of us.

We bought an air con unit for one bedroom, a lifesaver last year for those terrible hot days we had. Running cost was a few quid extra a day. I hate excessive heat too.

Blessedwithsunshine · 10/02/2023 08:07

I can’t wait for summer! It’s all I can think about. A heatwave also brings extra revenue to the country, people like to get together and buy a baby paddling pool now - pop it in the shade and enjoy the sunny days to come

middleager · 10/02/2023 08:08

It was miserable, relentless, and I'm not even in the south, I'm in the Midlands. It wasn't just five days. There were several MN threads about it and how many of us were struggling. Don't get me wrong, doesn't mean I love this cold. I really dislike extremes, but I'm particularly bad in the sun, so really struggle.

I feel your pain, OP, I couldn't wait for Autumn and am also dreading the summer.
