Not AIBU but this has been on my mind since my dad called me and I really need lots of support. She has severed her spinal cord. She will never walk again. He's in bits and I'm trying to distract myself from his distress. I've never dealt with something so tragic and awful. My dad is my rock and I don't know how to support him. It's out of my comfort zone to be his rock. They are both ultra marathoners which makes it 100% worse. She has been in my life since I was 15. I need help with this.

Hugs op. It's a shock. Can you do practical things for her now to help eg bring clothes etc she needs but more importantly listen and spend time with her. You sound amazing friend x

I won't be supporting her. She's my dad's friend, not mine. He was with her earlier. It's awful. She wants to die.

you dont need to go yet, if you are not a friend.
wait until she invites you

My dad has asked me to go with him once she's stronger. It won't be this week.

Your Dad is lucky to have you, your love for him shines in your post. Can you do practical things for him - do shopping, washing, pay bills, walk the dog, Light the fire for when he gets home?

He will need to talk to help process this, maybe not at first. The only advice I can give is not to jump in with platitudes or solutions- it's going to be shit for both of them.

Same for the friend, just be there for her.
