To think I should be paid for 2 bank holidays.

Before Christmas we were told that we would be paid double for any bank holidays that fall on the days we are working on our shift.

I worked Monday 26th & Tuesday 27th December and Sunday 1st January. Am I wrong in thinking that's Boxing day and New Year's Day I should get double for as I've only been paid one extra shift.

I'm not in work until Wednesday so thought I'd ask on here to see what others thought.

Sunday the 1st was technically not a bank holiday as it is moved to the Monday I believe, but both the 26th and 27th were definitely bank holidays. You need to clarify with HR the position on the 1st as it would usually have been a bank holiday but was deferred due to being a Sunday- there should be a policy which sets out how this is dealt with.

Also what's the payroll cut off date- it might be that the outstanding due are paid in the next payroll period?

I'm not sure. I thought one of those was boxing day and the other a substitute because Christmas day fell on a Sunday.

Payment for substitute bank holiday days depends what your contract says. So if it lists 25th 26th Dec 1st Jan then you don't have to be paid extra for the 27th. But if it just says Xmas Day Boxing Day or substituted days then the 27th would be paid as a bank holiday.

Check your contract and speak to HR/Payroll.

I've just looked at the gov.uk website and Mon 26th is boxing day, Tuesday 27th substitute Christmas day bank holiday. And Mon 3rd is substitute New Year's Day substitute.

So by that then I don't get paid for the Sunday for new years day but for Mon and Tuesday 26&27th?

Our cut off is the 20th then paid at the end of the month.

It depends on what sector you are in. My Dsis is in care and she worked the Monday & Tuesday over Christmas but only got double pay for the Monday which was boxing day.

The reason she didn't get paid double for the Tuesday (27th) is because other staff DID work on the Sunday (Christmas day) so they got paid double time for that day.

The business paid double time for the 2 days they were open and employing staff - which was the actual 25th & 26th. They would only pay double time if they were shut on the 25th and therefore used the substitute day on the 27th - however as they are open 24/7 they only pay double time for the actual bank hols not the substitute ones as they are not relevant to them.

You should have put that at the start as it's different to what you said in your original post. According to that, yes, you should be paid for the 26th and the 1st. HOWEVER I doubt they only sent out a one line message, so you need to let us know what else they said in case it contradicts the headline. e.g. it may specify dates.

Agree - this is different. You need to find out if they pay double time for the actual dates themselves or the bank holidays. Either way it seems right you should be paid for 2, not 1.
