To think that unless you are 100% curtain about conspiracy theories (and ideally comfortable/ able to provide proof) you should keep them to yourself.

I keep on seeing on social media people posting slander about various people (often celebrities). What annoys me is they post all this stuff, and when asked for prof they share very flimsy evidence as fact, that would be laughed out of a court if to be used in one. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a free country and it’s often hard to prove crimes on a ‘hear-say’ basis. but AIBU to think that unless you are 100% confident that what your saying is truth you should not be presenting it as fact.

You lost me when you got to "we don't live in a free country"

Because unfortunately we don’t. Yes we have liberal speech policies but (for better or for worst) not complete freedom.

I don't have any conspiracy theories about curtains..... do you?

Obviously meant to say ‘certain’. With the greatest respect its 2:00 in the morning, and my spelling isn't the greatest 🤦‍♀️

Conspiracy theories are not the same as Celebrity gossip.

Well, you never know what they're trying to hide.

Hups · 30/01/2023 02:31

I don't think my curtains hold any conspiracy theories to be honest.
The blinds though, they're a different matter.

Starrynightz · 30/01/2023 02:36

What do you suggest? That we go back to locking people up in institutions?

Your post is extremely short sighted. What about people with no critical thinking skills, lack of education, lack of intelligence.

People are allowed the freedom of speech.

Skyrimisveryrelaxing · 30/01/2023 02:58

im not curtain i completely understand?

EldersOfTheInternet · 30/01/2023 03:07

You seem to be stretching the meaning of "Conspiracy theories" unless you are talking about accusations of paedophilia rings In Hollywood etc
Has someone accused you of something?

rumship · 30/01/2023 03:07

If your talking about curtain gossip it's an open and shut case. But OP I think you do not understand the definition of conspiracy theories if your discussing celebrities🧐

SpookyBlackCat · 30/01/2023 03:14

Conspiracy theories are aimed at groups or organisations not individuals otherwise there would be no conspiracy, so maybe you are talking about something different.

I think some are just terrible like Holocaust deniers, Sandy Hook deniers, and the QAnon shit, but some are plausible like was COVID-19 leaked from a Chinese lab, are the recent deaths of some Russian Oligarchs not actually accidents, did the UK government hush up data in the lead-up to the Gulf War.

I think there are some really awful celebrities out there who have gotten away with doing terrible things. It's hard to understand what you are referring to though.

JudgeRudy · 30/01/2023 03:23

I'm not sure if what you've written is what you mean. I think what you mean is someone posts that John Travolta is gay and someone else asks for proof. You get an answer which is just an opinion or hear say. My favourite is when people write in block capitals or say Fact. End of! Like that clinches the deal.
Is that what you mean? Or do you mean stuff like the illuminati, or flat earth society?
I think it's OK to say what you believe but it's wrong to present it as a fact. There are legal channels for libel etc. I'll put up with it in exchange for freedom of expression (which I believe is being eroded away)

I would just like to be clear. You do know that you are posting this on MumsNet, don't you? Have you read many of the threads recently???? If posting slander and "facts" based on flimsy evidence (usually the Daily Fail) wasn't allowed then the site would have three threads going.

sst1234 · 30/01/2023 03:32

Calling every opinion that doesn’t fit the mainstream has become a way of shutting down debate.

SpookyBlackCat · 30/01/2023 05:54

Also, if you are 100% certain about something, it’s no longer a theory, it’s a fact.

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/01/2023 05:59

If #MeToo proved anything it's that 'gossip' should be listened to, because men in power use lawyers and laws to keep themselves out of Court. If someone says a celeb is dodgy, almost every time it's turned out to be true.

Conspiracy theories are quite another thing.

GoodChat · 30/01/2023 06:05

You can't always prove everything, even if you know it to be fact.

Whatwouldscullydo · 30/01/2023 06:07

Oh I love conspiracy theory. Most are bollocks however I do love hearing and seeing the trains of thought behind it all and how that pans out. Listening and/or participating in the discussion doesn't mean you believe it or buy it. The thought processes fascinate me. The more the merrier 😂

WandaWonder · 30/01/2023 06:09

By whose definition is a conspiracy theory over whatever else you want to call it?

Crumpetdisappointment · 30/01/2023 06:10

Ooh, please do let us know which countries in the world are free
you need to inform yourself about other countries and then count your blessings
Or, better still, emigrate

blippyissilly · 30/01/2023 07:09

It's down to you to disprove them
