To assume I don't need to pay the "DartCharge" for this journey?

The pucture is part of a car journey I did today. I travelled east on the A2 then joined the M25 and travelled south. I thenpassed under a sign which said something like "You must pay the DartCharge by midnight tomorrow". It was a bit confusing because I'm not familiar with the area. However, I've now looked it up and I think the sign must have been aimed at drivers who'd used the Dartford Crossing, which us north of where I joined the M25. Am I correct?

Dh (we are from Scotland) used the crossing without realising/noticing there was a charge (long journey from Scotland rushing to beside of dying relative). Because he hadn't ever used the crossing before and didnt have an account he got a letter through telling him to just pay the charge and he wouldnt be fined as it was the first time.

It was around 5 years ago but assuming nothing has changed if you havent used the bridge before you hopefully wont be fined.
