To ask for positive Mini Pill experiences?

Just that really.

Been reading up on here but conscious that naturally we tend to turn to the internet for help when we have negative experiences than positive.. so keen to hear from anyone who has had a positive experience.

I'm nearly 40, DC is 10.

I got put on it for horrific PMT - I had days of heavy bleeding, then a few days of feeling normal, then two weeks of feeling like shit in the run up in to the next period - I would bloat up, have night sweats, fly into rages, have really black thoughts and felt suicidal and it was horrific. I had to go and see a consultant to figure out what was wrong but the mini pill has been life changing for me.

I did have a couple of really heavy periods in the first six months of taking it - I was flooding through sanpro and it was particularly awkward when we were on a weekend away. But it was well worth persevering with, I now haven't had a period in 18 months and feel a lot better.

You can get tranexamic acid from the doctor if your period is bad, although as soon as I got mine my periods stopped and I never actually took it.

Took mini pill for approx 10 years. Couldn’t take the combined pill due to migraines.

No issues, no periods, no migraines and didn’t get pregnant.

Stopped to have kids and got pregnant practically first month each time so obviously fertile, took briefly in between pregnancies and I got a mirena coil after DC2.

Did you stop periods and any spotting as soon as you started though?
Or was there a bit of settling in?

Thanks Hop,
This is really reassuring, so glad it worked out for you in the end.
My PMT & Periods dont sound as bad as yours were but they are bad enough I am trying this even though I dont need contraception! (No sex happening here 🙄)

VestaTilley · 08/05/2023 12:56

It basically killed my libido. Not sure I’d recommend it. But it was a very effective contraceptive in that case!

@moderationincludingmoderation Thanks! I know there's an increased risk of cancer with the mini pill but I had given up exercise because I felt so dreadful and since going on it I've lost 1.5 stone and do regular workouts so I think in my case the benefits outweigh the downsides.

If it's any use, the couple of periods I had after starting the mini pill began with a bit of spotting and then got REALLY heavy for over a week (like I went on an hour long car journey and by the end had soaked through a pad and onto the seat kind of bad), then got gradually lighter. It went on for a few weeks. I should have probably gone to the doc sooner about it but by that point I felt a lot better overall and didn't want to risk them stopping the pill.

Thanks Hoplite, that's all very helpful!
I'm more hopeful it'll settle eventually, just gotta stick with it.

Just updating for anyone who ever comes across this thread...
After 3 months.. I stopped taking Desogestrel yesterday.
It had it's upsides (lighter periods, less major anxiety lows)
But the downside has outwieghed that now... no massive lows but also no highs. DH and I both agreed I've just not been myself. No low lows... but instead a constant a version of a low.
I'm missing that Oestrogen lift. Not having it, and having all that progesterone is hampering my creativity, focus & mostly my confidence. I've felt so insecure and needy. Which is just not me!
So I'm ditching it. I'm glad I gave it a go though, and I can see that it can work for many.

JenniferBooth · 10/06/2023 17:45

Im on this. Im 50 in a matter of days What are my chances of getting pregnant if i ditch this.

mondaytosunday · 10/06/2023 18:02

I took the mini pill between my pregnancies (for about nine months then we started trying for baby 2). Can't remember the name but it was brilliant- no periods, no side effects, got pregnant a few months after I came off it.

Starrrz · 30/10/2023 23:25

For anyone who had migraines which mini pill did you take ? X

London2357 · 05/12/2023 09:25

What brand are you taking? X

London2357 · 05/12/2023 09:27

What brand are people on for no periods?
ivw been on it 2 months and bleeding / spotting irregularly loads.

bookwormcrazy · 05/12/2023 09:31

HappyHolidai · 26/01/2023 11:27

Brilliant: no periods, no PMT, just great!

Same here, I'm 39 and have been on it for over 10 years because of endometriosis. Haven't had a flare up since due to no periods. It's bliss.

I've been on Desogestrel for a good few years. From memory, I had irregular spotting/occasional bleeds for probably the first 3 or 4 months before it settled to nothing at all. I think the nurse recommended giving it 6 months to settle.

I've had no problems with any brands or generics. @London2357

Started off on Cerazette then they changed it due to cost to Cerelle (ridiculous levels of emotional blackmail from the nurse over £5! You'd think I was responsible for the entire underfunding of the NHS). Anyway, it changed to generic desogestrel maybe a couple of years ago and I never seem to get the same brand of generic twice in a row.

I seem to be fortunate but it hasn't ever made a difference what version I've had, they all work well.

GreyhpundGirl · 05/12/2023 18:28

I've taken it for 3 years, since my daughter was born— I'm in my 40s. No issue at all with it, nor with the normal pill I took for years previously.

London2357 · 05/12/2023 21:54

That’s brill. I’m 2 months in and had two bleeds. Hoping it stops soon!! I used to be on it pre baby for years and never bled!
