To want to get pepper spray to feel safe?

Reading recent news has me feeling really worried about my and my kids’ safety. Is it unreasonable to be thinking of buying some kind of self-defense device or classes?

It seems like you can get attacked any time at any time of day or night, in a public place or whatever, with or without people around, with or without dogs (which I always thought would be a deterrent). We’ve got rape alarms and I was looking at the colour spray stuff but I just wonder if an attacker would just get even more violent unless you can somehow disarm/disable them (ie with pepper spray or similar - I know pepper spray isn’t legal in the UK).

How do you keep your children and yourselves feeling safe? Or do you just avoid reading those news stories so as not to worry unnecessarily?! (I realise that these things aren’t common but that the media love to report as salaciously as possible on any crime that does occur!)

And self-defense classes - can anyone tell me they’ve used what they’ve learned and it worked? I always worry I’d just forget what I’ve learned in the moment… worrying too much I know!
