I've started to do a Programme of self healing called' How to meet yourself'.
It's essentially a work book to help heal and change mindset following many years of trauma. I' m in theprocess of divorce and have just finished a relationship with what I think was a narcissist.latter a few years.
I have a tough family life and Dad isnt involved with our kids who each have SN.
I used to be so positive, optimistic and so full of happiness and lightness.
I'm now a sad shell of
Misery And trying to pull myself out of the fog.
Is it Possible to ' do the work', to manifest a wonderful life through setting intentions and trying to live those intentions?
Has anyone done this And have you had good/ bad results ?
The workbook is renowned as is the author , Dr Nicola Perrera. Aka The Holistic Psychologist

Her work is very good. It will help you through your divorce.

I’ve followed a number of life coach types in the past and ended up seeing through a lot of their bulls*.

The holistic psychologist is different in my view. She is still doing the work herself and is very honest and open about that. I like that she has a background in psychology too.

I think words like manifest ring alarm bells because it is the language of charlatans and their prey.

But yeah, you need to be in it to win it. And you need to be optimistic enough to suspend your doubts and start interesting new adventures.

SomePosters · 23/01/2023 11:08

You can’t manifest a better life by just setting intentions unless those intentions are things like ‘get a qualification that means you can earn more than minimum wage’ or ‘exercising everyday’

there’s a great podcast called by the book where two women try to live by the life advice these kind of books give.
It will help you see the tropes and put you in a better position to take what’s good about it (the emotional labour you’re doing on yourself post divorce) and leave the bull (manifesting a different life with no real effort or commitment)

Greatly · 23/01/2023 11:10

I like her. I don't think her book and ideas will do you any harm OP.

PortiasBiscuit · 23/01/2023 11:11

It’s fine to have life goals and work towards them. No one can manifest anything, if by manifest you mean shutting your eyes and wishing!

Rachaelrachael · 23/01/2023 11:19

I believe that you can manifest different things into your future. I know many people think it's a load of rubbish but it's worked for me. It's not just a case of thinking of something and it will land on your doorstep. You need to put the work in too. For me it's helped me to change my mindset to a more positive one and to overcome fears and self doubt that was holding me back.
Just a couple of things that I've manifested - I decided I really wanted a partner in my life after going on a break where everyone else was in couples, and I met my husband 2 days later.
Also recently moved into my dream home that I've visualised for years.

Currently reading manifest by roxie nafousi and it has lots of practical ideas.

FourTeaFallOut · 23/01/2023 11:23

So what's this difference between manifesting and working towards a goal then?

Greatly · 23/01/2023 11:24

I believe in manifesting if it means being focused on a positive goal and truly believing that it will happen.

FourTeaFallOut · 23/01/2023 11:27

So, some kind of faith-based, getting shit done?

Greatly · 23/01/2023 11:28

I don't think it's necessarily faith based in a traditional religious sense.

Marigoldandivy · 23/01/2023 11:53

If you want something and do what it takes to get it, I suppose it will manifest itself. Without doing whatever it takes, it will remain an aspiration.

ReamsOfCheese · 23/01/2023 11:58

Manifesting is woo woo semi-occult praying stuff without the religious aspect. You do you but it's mostly just unicorns and wishes just like praying or other forms of wishful thinking.

thetrees · 23/01/2023 12:11

I think Nicola Perrera is very good, but I don't think she is advocating manifesting.

If you do the work that she advocates then I guess you could hope for some greater understanding of yourself and therefore greater happiness, but that's probably as far as it would go.

I think her book looks great though, I hope it helps you

LaLuz7 · 23/01/2023 12:12

Spoiler alert. You can't. The end.

OMG12 · 15/03/2023 07:10

You can absolutely change your life through a change within yourself. A personal alchemy and people have been doing it for thousands of years.

What I have against many of the modern takes, The Secret being a prime example is it takes a tiny piece out of those traditions and gives it to someone completely alien to the context. It’s akin to an atheist being given the Eucharist and saying that it will change their life.

Now you might or might not fall lucky in that something will click, but really these things work as part of a usually complex system people spend years learning.

I know this is a resurrected old thread, but OP, just in case you're still around, Dr Nicole LePera is very well renowned. In fact her book How To Do The Work was recommended by my community mental health team.

I think people have picked up on the manifesting part of your post and think that it's like The Secret or one of those type of books, when actually her work is more about recognising the effect trauma has on your body and brain and helping reframe your thoughts/reactions.

Ponoka7 · 15/03/2023 08:19

There's been massive amounts of research done for decades on Buddhist intention setting and meditation. It's recognised as a effective method of healing/giving good mental health, by psychology and psychiatry. You don't have to believe the faith side to the latter. The disciplined thinking and acting makes people feel a lot better. If Dr NL follows a similar path, with her professional input on top, then it's worth giving a go.

Mmmm… maybe look into the history of psychotherapy

MMMarmite · 17/03/2023 14:04

Yes it's possible to heal from trauma. "Manifesting" is bullshit though. If you're going to spend time and money on this, make sure that you're doing something reputable.

nofluffsgiven · 17/03/2023 14:17

I used to believe in all this kind of stuff but now I know that life is just a combination of consequences from your actions or other peoples actions and luck, both good and bad.

If you want things to go a certain way you have to make sure your actions align with the most likely outcome and avoid actions/people/situations that will lead you away from your goal. Things will always go a bit wrong no matter what you do, but you are the only person that can swing probability in your favour.

ThroughLife · 17/03/2023 14:20

she is toxic
don’t go down the instagram trauma experts or LOA rabbit whole

it is simple

  • tomorrow is a new day
  • be grateful for what you have
  • use your talents

the secret is not to avoid suffering but learn to navigate it
