I have just had my mum round. She is always critical about something, usually it's my appearance and sometimes it's my house.

Today she was insistent I had to do something in the garden. I said it wasn't happening and we went back and forth for ages.

She also thinks I'm incapable of most things despite me managing life just fine. I manage to get myself to my job (which is quite a skilled-role) and back fine. It's fucking horrible and I've just shut the door on her and wanted to scream very hard. I didn't.

Anyone else want to rant?

Yes, my MIL.
She is constantly nit-picking and starting phrases with "I'm just saying...." or "I just thought you should know..."
It's everything from how I make a cup of tea to what kind of soap dish I have in the bathroom to what wash cycle I put a load of bed sheets on for. She's never overtly mean but it's like the death of 1000 cuts. The comments come thick and fast every moment of her (very long) stays.
Worse though is that she treats my DH like a silly and incompetent child. She has no interest in the fact that he has built a very good career from scratch in this country (moved here 16 years ago), is well-regarded at work, has loads of friends, regularly sends money home and is a great cook. Barely registers with her at all. From the moment she walks in through our front door with her suitcase it's nag, nag, nag. Including when he is trying to work. Incessant phonecalls if he is in the office, or non-stop interruptions if he is WFH. Once she sat in the same room as him (bedroom doubling as a study) folding his underpants and balling socks while he was on a CONFERENCE CALL.
She is degree educated, cultured and fluent in English. She has had opportunities in life. Yet she has chosen to become utterly insular and attempts to drag everyone else into her vortex of smallmindness at every opportunity. It's all about control. I cannot understand the mentality.

Also wanted to add, I'm really sorry that you have to deal with this, OP. It must be very hurtful and wearing.
