Not to visit friend who has a flea infestation

I’m meant to go to a friends for dinner tomorrow evening. She’s texted me to say she has a bloody flea infestation at the minute. I know it’s possible to carry them on your clothes (I checked with my vet) If I did bring them home - I just don’t want the hassle of treating my house. I’ve got pets -they’re treated regularly. But I know they will happily live in carpets etc. My friend tells me she ordered stuff to treat her house but it won’t happen by tomorrow evening. I’ve suggested we go out instead. I’ve been really tactful . I’m not for one minute suggesting her house is dirty - not at all. I said she shouldn’t feel embarrassed Fleas don’t discriminate! She’s not got back to me - I’m worried I’ve offended her

I wouldn't. They come home with you on your clothes. Just not worth it

2023WeAllNeedToTalk · 20/01/2023 20:47

I wouldn’t go!
If she’s been honest with you that her house has them I am sure she would understand that it’s a good reason for you not to go to her house.

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/01/2023 20:48

Of course you shouldn’t go, which she will understand.

Keyansier · 20/01/2023 20:48

I wouldn't go.

I wouldn't have personally said she shouldn't feel embarrassed about it though, unless she specifically told me she was feeling so.

bagpuss90 · 20/01/2023 20:48

That’s what I’m thinking

I have 2 cats and 2 dogs;I wouldn't be going and potentially bringing fleas home;I hope your friend has some indotex.

I agree with this. It’s an odd thing to say unless you think she should actually be embarrassed. It comes across as quite patronising and rude.

BumpySkull
Her message started with - “this is a bit embarrassing…” That’s why I said she shouldn’t feel embarrassed. I wasn’t being patronising-I was just trying to make her feel better -that’s all

She told you for a reason so is probably expecting you not to go

itswednesdayy · 20/01/2023 20:55

This is definitely an occasion that you should rearrange. You’re not being unreasonable in the slightest. She obviously knows what a faff it is having fleas in the house, she should be understanding that you don’t want to deal with that either.

Samsonsmum · 20/01/2023 20:55

No no just don't go. Unless you want a couple (at least) of new pets

bagpuss90 · 20/01/2023 20:57

Samsonsmum More like a couple of hundred 😂

I wouldn't... but I would recommend treating your house regularly, its far better to routinely treat the home, and then treat the pets IF theres any signs of anything. The chemicals involved will not hurt your home (or your pets, once dry), and mean anything that jumps on and then off your pet (or you) once home, cannot start a new infestation.

cinnamonbiscuit · 20/01/2023 21:34

Please don’t go! Having experienced a flea infestation via our old cat I would never ever go anywhere near them, it was a nightmarish weekend trying to get rid of them. She should understand that you wouldn’t want to bring them home.

whatat · 20/01/2023 21:42

Don't go! We had a dreadful flea infestation a few years ago. It caused so much money, hassle and time to fix. We didn't have any pets so had no idea where they came from ... until the mother of my daughters friend from school was making light hearted comments about how she doesn't bother treating her cats, they just put up with the fleas! Her daughter had been to our house to play several times and had obviously brought them with her. She wasn't invited again!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 20/01/2023 21:45

No don’t go. She was telling you upfront so you could change location or reschedule. Honestly, who wants visitors that you’ll be worried about on top of fleas that you’re trying to get rid of.

bagpuss90 · 20/01/2023 21:56

I’ve spoken to her again and I think she’s relieved . She said her DP thought I was over reacting but I can’t help that . Shes fine and that’s what matters. We’re going out instead

YANBU
I got bit by fleas on the Tube. Those buggers will infest anywhere.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 21/01/2023 00:01

I wouldn't go, but at least she told you today, not when you're already there!

Judgyjudgy · 21/01/2023 00:05

Don't do it, I once got them from work! It was hideous and they infested my house. Twice!
