To think there’s dirt in my soup?

One of them Covent Garden soups in a carton. Mushroom. Five spoonfuls in. Delicious. Or is it? I bite into what I think is an extra girthy piece of mushroom and find it just tastes…earthy. Like what I imagine the potting mix for my peace lily would taste like.

Does this look like a (now masticated) lump of dirt? Do I eat the rest? There’s so much left 🥲 but it’s put me right off.

Certainly looks like dirt!

FadedRed · 18/01/2023 18:24

Yuk, I think that would ruin my appetite.

Daftasabroom · 18/01/2023 18:28

Mushrooms aren't grown in normal compost and the hygiene is really very strict.

Changingplace · 18/01/2023 18:31

Yuck! Yeah that looks like soil :(

What do you think it might be? It’s certainly not mushroom in texture, tis all bitty.

I’m all forlorn. It’s the first thing I’ve been able to eat after a dental abscess. Or not eat, as it were.

Could it be stock ?

Daftasabroom · 18/01/2023 18:42

I'd take it back whatever but I doubt you'll get I'll, just hungry.

It will be soil but it's not the usual soil you get in the ground, it's very hygienic and managed/engineered so it won't be riddled with germs (or something Grin don't really know what I'm on about)

OrangeBlossom28 · 18/01/2023 18:49

I had dirt/grit in a packet of Gallo mushroom risotto mix from Waitrose once. It was really disgusting as it was only when I ate it that I realised.

Flowersintheattic57 · 18/01/2023 18:51

Mushrooms have to be grown on on compost that’s been sterilised, otherwise all the wrong kinds of microbial activity takes over. I’m no expert, just had a peruse into growing my own mushrooms and it all looked a terrible faff.

HanarCantWearSweaters · 18/01/2023 18:54

Oh I’m not concerned about getting ill even if it was normal non-mushroom-grade compost, I’ve got quite a sturdy constitution, tooth excepting. I am quite sad about my dinner though. There’s nothing for it, I’ll just have to eat the last of the Lindt chocolate in the cupboard. Shame.

Maybe I’ll get free soup.

I once ordered a sandwich from a trendy cafe place, it contained sliced raw mushrooms. Half way through I discovered it also contained sliced large spider when I saw legs hanging out of the edge of the bread and investigated.

I have never trusted mushrooms since, unless I am preparing them myself.

Would you eat it if told to do so?
No?
There's your answer-sorry OP, this is learned helplessness at its worst

Oh! I thought they were grown in cow poo and that's why they had to be washed especially if pregnant.

Ha ha. Yes, they are grown in a mixture of cow manure and straw that has been sterilized then inoculated with mushroom spore (seed).

I had an evening job picking mushrooms. We all wore coveralls that were supplied fresh daily and wellies as there were sterilisation baths we had to walk through between sheds, hand sanitizer the lot. It's a really highly controlled very clean environment.

I once ordered garlic mushrooms in a pub and there was a pube in them.

LordSugarTits · 18/01/2023 19:53

Mmm cow shit soup. Delish

Suzi888 · 18/01/2023 19:58

So it’s poop?🤣🤣🤣🤣I hope not! I’ve always hated mushrooms…

The worst thing I’ve had is a hair.
Well, not counting the shrimp in what I thought was vegan pasta.

DM once had a veggie burger from McDonald’s and I requested it minus the chillies. What we didn’t know is that the chillies were in the burger. So she ended up with a lettuce bap 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣
That was her first and last McDonald’s, at the age of 80!

Do you know how many times tap water has been through other people before being fed back into the mains water system?

Since forever really. The water from your tap is the same water that people have peed or pooed out, flushed into the sewers, released into the sea, evaporated fallen as rain into the reservoir, into the water table, into the underground spring, filtered, chlorinated and sent back into the pipes in your house.

As for cowshit soup, all compost is made from rotting matter. From teabags to bones to blood to shit.
