To think my hairdresser is taking the piss?

I’m trying to get my hair lifted light enough to go silver.

I’ve just been 2 weeks ago to the hairdresser and had a toner put on (no bleach, not had bleach for 3 months) and it cost £100. The toner has already washed out. Fine I kind of expected it.

I’ve text her to arrange a bleach session and she said I should wait even longer and just have toner again. £100 for something that lasts two washes. And she said my hair isn’t in good condition. My hair seems fine to me, don’t get me wrong it’s not 10/10 health but it’s hardly candy floss.

Where are you located? Obviously prices will differ depending.

Well it was £92 - and no cut as I specifically said do not cut anything off it. I’m not going to book another toner. I can find someone else to do that.

I just want to get the colour I want 🙄

I’m in London. I pay £130 for a full head of highlights, plus £30 toner.

MysteryBelle · 15/01/2023 00:39

Oh my, you have beautiful hair. Just how it is. Wow. I can see nothing wrong with it, although I know nothing about coloring my hair, have never had it done.

I’d say 100% of women would love to have your gorgeous hair. Anyway, hope you find solution to your problem. Which I don’t consider a problem 😂

Heyahun · 15/01/2023 00:39

That’s expensive

I pay 172 for bleach, olaplex and toner in north London!

mamabear715 · 15/01/2023 00:41

I'd echo PP's & say your hair looks stunning.
Good condition too, from what I can see.

I hate going to hairdressers (no offence, hairdressers, just don't like it!) I just slap nice n easy on mine & get compliments! :-)

I agree, your current colour is really pretty!

Can you link to the colour you‘re aiming for? Your hair is probably light enough to achieve a slightly deeper shade of silver with just toner and no extra bleach. Or is it a silvery platinum type shade you want?

Sorry this is the best reference I can get, as my other photo just won’t upload.

Thank you for the lovely comments btw. My hairdresser made me feel like I was walking around with fluff on my head.

My full head highlights plus a cut costs about £70

I pay that for a half head. Can’t remember how much I paid for just toner but less than this.

Yes having roots is presumably a problem if you want silver hair as they wouldn’t be silver? If you have taken 6 months to get to that colour presumably the new hair growing in would need several treatments? I thought you said you’d had no bleach just a toner in the last 3 months?

I wrote out a long paragraph but it’s irrelevant how my roots are to what I’m posting about.

Yeah she is, go elsewhere.

I have very fine, naturally honey blonde hair which I describe as being more like cat hair than human hair. On NYE I decided to bleach the ever loving life out of it and go silver. I was given very strict instructions from a hairdresser friend. It worked. To get the silver tone I am using a product called Keracolor Clenditioner. It has protein and moisture and acts as a treatment. I can assure you that this stuff really works. I wash with Fudge purple shampoo (leave on for 5 mins) then use a combo of silver and blue grey to ensure that all yellow is mopped up. They also have toning drops that you can add to your styling products like serums to get rid of extra yellow.
I have also discovered K19 conditioner which is a leave-in, more immediate version of olaplex (which I also don’t get along with) this stuff is magical. You just run it through wet hair and it leaves your hair feeling amazing and I have noticed a vast increase in resilience since using it.
I have added a photo, but it was after an especially brutal day at work. I had literally just pulled it out of it’s ‘do and not even brushed it. This is the silver colour I have achieved.

What colour are your roots? A toner won’t colour dark roots. My daughter hair colour is similar to yours and she gets a silver effect by using Purple Mask from home bargains (with the purple shampoo etc on the shelves). It’s in a tub, costs about £3. I think she leaves it on about 20 mins. Worth a try.

JustForABitofFun · 15/01/2023 03:37

What makes you think the area you live in is so expensive?

Appleblum · 15/01/2023 03:45

You're being ripped off. Central London here and it costs me £20 for toner.

Lovely! Beginning to think about lightening my brown hair....🤔

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 15/01/2023 04:07

I love your hair colour op!

mummyh2016 · 15/01/2023 05:45

OP I believe people are asking about roots as they may be thinking you're having tint instead of a toner - toner wouldn't effect the roots whereas tint would. I'm a bit puzzled as to why you seem to have taken offence.

iloveyankeecandle · 15/01/2023 06:03

I am west mids. Pay £50 for cut, head of highlights and toner. But she is my friend.

Thank you, very nice of you to say. It’s just frustrating when you have a colour in mind and I feel I should have reached it in 6 months.

I think your hair is a nice colour. I am not really understating what you are trying to do, go silver? I read that as grey but you say you aren’t naturally grey yet.

StarInTheHeavens · 15/01/2023 07:26

Hairdressers royally take the piss. I don't bother with them any more. Who can afford £150 a visit? Rip off.

atteatimeeverybodyagrees · 15/01/2023 07:29

I would go to another hairdresser. Look at examples of their work in Instagram if you can. Then go for a consultation. Explain to them exactly what has been done to your hair already.

LuciusMeowFoy · 15/01/2023 07:42

I’m in the West Midlands too and have very long, extra thick hair. I pay around £75 for roots, toner and cut/style!

RedCatWhoGotTheCream · 15/01/2023 07:46

The picture you posted looks more like pearl blond than silver to me? You will need to go lighter (more bleach) for this. Definitely go elsewhere and see what they say. The condition of your hair looks fine to me, don’t see why it shouldn’t be possible.

trampoline123 · 15/01/2023 07:57

That's really taking the piss and toners usually last about 5 weeks. I had a toner recently actually and it was £75 as you have to pay for a wash and blow dry if you're not ring a cut and that's in London.

Go to a different hairdresser and book a colour consultation.

trampoline123 · 15/01/2023 07:59

There's an app called Treatwell where you can look at different hairdressers and their price lists and reviews etc - I always use it when going somewhere new. They often have deals on too.

Schnooze · 15/01/2023 08:06

Why do you need to bleach it 1-2 times? Once it’s bleached, it’s bleached!
