To think the movie The Accountant is oddly good representation of Autism?

Obviously apart from the crime.

I saw it yesterday and what really stood out to me was that it was two autistic people at two very different levels that are completely dominating in their field whilst still showing their very real struggles.

It may well be a good representation of an autistic individual, but not all autistic people are the same - all have differing abilities and strengths. I guess I’d like to see more representation of autistic people in film that aren’t savants - just about every one I’ve seen has a character that has exceptional skill in maths or whatever. My DS is not a savant, I still keep getting asked what his “special power” is by people who have watched films like this and think all autistic people are the same.

There are plenty like that. It showed two very different levels primarily but it also had all of the kids in the home.

It's important to show the gifted autistics too

YABU as it seems only the gifted are often represented on film and TV

yes it’s great the film also showed some other levels in there, but the main character was still a ‘genius’ and it focused on that a fair amount.

Have you watched frozen, community, the middle, the it crowd, anything with them in? Why in your mind are they good but not gifted autistic representations?

Firstly who the fuck is autistic in Frozen

secondly in the middle again autism is shown as intelligence

Same with the IT crowd.

It’s frustrating for autism to constantly be lauded as a gift, when for the vast majority it’s not

I love this film, one of Ben Affleck's best ones

I think you really need to watch them again 🤨

I think you’re seeing autism where there isn’t any, for example frozen.

Data from Sart Trek accidently became a good representation for people with autism, specifically episodes where the b plot is him trying to fit in socially. Apparently Brent spinner gets thanked a lot at conventions.

I wana know who is autistic in frozen too!

I watch the middle and brick is definitely autistic (some things do remind me of my son) I don't think he's typically played as a brainiac though, more just loves books and reading is clearly his special interest
