AIBU to consider getting one of these for dd14? She is so grumpy in the mornings in winter. Does it give a pleasant light?

Which one is better the sunrise alarm or body clock?

TIA

I have used a sunrise alarm clock for years, it helps so much in the winter. It's the difference between waking up gradually and normally, and feeling like you've been hit on the head with a cricket bat when the electric lights go on.

I can't comment on either of those models, I have a Philips one that starts red and smoothly lights up to yellow.

But it's definitely worth it, if it's definitely a winter problem.

WarmAndFine · 11/01/2023 18:27

Thank you @Purplelemons123 that sounds great is it the Philips Wake Up light?

Yes I have a Lumie and it makes such a difference not having to haul myself out of bed in the pitch dark. Same with the lights like PP said. I also like the sunset mood as set it while reading my book and as it dims it really helps with feeling sleepy. I’ve had mine for ages now well over ten years and it’s been great.

BamBamBilla · 11/01/2023 18:31

I have a lumie, don't know which model I bought it second hand from faceache about 6ish years ago. Can't comment on how it compares to others I guess you just need to list what features you want.

I love not waking like a ton of bricks has fallen on my head and the past few years I've now got into the routine of naturally waking before the light is coming on. It's nice to slowly snooze as it gets brighter.

WarmAndFine · 11/01/2023 20:29

I'm still undecided, is the light it makes warm or white?

Mine is the Smartsleep, but I got it on sale or maybe from eBay fully boxed, I'm sure I only paid about £50 a few years back.

I have a Phillips one.

I don’t think the actual type of light makes too much difference, for me it’s just a much more gentle wake up process as the light gets brighter. Much less jarring than being woken suddenly in the dark by an alarm.

QueenSmartypants · 11/01/2023 20:31

I love my lumie.

The pictures on website are quite accurate as to light. The sunset feature is a lovely warm red which helps you switch off at night, and vide versa in the morning

SherbetDips · 11/01/2023 20:32

I love mine, I wake up naturally every morning.

NamelessTemptress01 · 11/01/2023 20:32

I have a lumie, I put it behind my curtain so it is more of a morning glow and not too bright

tealandteal · 11/01/2023 21:09

I have a Lumie, it’s a very warm light. I also use it at night for feeding DS, it’s very soft. I keep it dim for night feeds and if I use it as the alarm it stops that horrible dragged out of sleep feeling.

PinkArt · 11/01/2023 21:11

I just checked as I assumed mine was a sunrise but apparently it is called the body clock. I recommend. I'm terrible in the morning so still need the loud alarm function, but it being light in the room when that happens helps a lot.
I liked the idea of the sun rise slowly waking me, but that clearly works on much lighter sleepers!

youshouldnthaveasked · 11/01/2023 21:12

Yes, we have a sunrise one. Love it. You can programme it to come on at 4 levels of light.

laurenlodge · 11/01/2023 21:13

Absolutely love my lumie and if it broke I'd replace it in a heartbeat. I've got a really old basic model (the 'starter 30' apparently) and it's still working perfectly fine!

EVHead · 11/01/2023 21:14

I’ve had a Lumie for years and I love it! It makes the dark mornings so much easier. I’m in a totally different mood when woken up gently by the rising sun! I even set it to come on when I don’t need to be up in the morning as the improvement in mood is so good.

I have the one that also has a sunset option - really helps me fall asleep.

Oysterbabe · 11/01/2023 21:15

I used to really love mine gradually waking me up. Now I am woken every morning by the screech of 'MUMMY!!!'

megletthesecond · 11/01/2023 21:16

I've had a mid range lumie for over a decade. I love it. Only needed the bulb changing once.
16yo DS has a reconditioned one and is much chirpier for it.

PlanBea · 11/01/2023 21:18

We have three lumies (two bodyclocks and one bug for DS) and I have bought them for various friends on their wedding registries. It makes a huge difference for me in the morning, and was great when I was up all night with baby DS breastfeeding too. Absolutely worth every penny for how it makes me feel in the morning compared to a normal alarm

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 11/01/2023 21:18

I love my lumie clock. DD has one now as well. Wouldn't be without it in the winter mornings!

Shouldhavebutdidnt · 11/01/2023 21:20

I had a lumie but upgraded to Hue lightbulbs which I used all over the house to do sunrise / sunset.

Don’t know what the price difference is but in DC’s room both the main light & bedside light do sunrise then the bedside lights in our room.

was worried it was a gimmick but love them now

OrangePomander · 11/01/2023 21:27

I love my Lumie. The best thing is the sunset feature, so when I’m reading in bed and invariably fall asleep the light switches itself off!
Also love waking up with the birdsong option.

TheCraicDealer · 11/01/2023 21:28

I’m the same as @Oysterbabe , loved my Lumie pre-DD. Now she’s my alarm clock! Once she starts pre-school next year and we have a stricter morning routine I’ll get it on the rip again.

I’ve had mine more than ten years and DH originally thought it was a pile of shit as a concept, but he admitted after we moved in together it really does work. It’s still shit when then alarm goes off for the most part, but it stops that awful gritty-eyed, “MY EYES!” sensation when you put the big light on. I also used it a lot for night feeds and settling DD when she was still in her bedside in our room. It’s just a brilliant bit of kit.

I know this is an old thread but I've been using mine for the first winter and love it. What time of year do you find you can stop? Been trying to think when the mornings get light enough that I can stop setting it. I set it to 6.15am. April? Earlier?

I use it all year round

Weallnamechangesometimes · 28/02/2024 23:03

I love my lumie, I no longer feel like I'm being walloped awake.
