To think “that’s just how they are” isn’t an excuse?

Not too long ago I met a friend of a friend and I found her extremely rude.

Friend has now asked what I thought of her and I told her. Told her why and friend said “that’s just how she is, she doesn’t think before she speaks, she doesn’t mean it”

I don’t care. I’m at an age now where I don’t want to hang out with people that insult what you’re wearing but “didn’t mean it like that”

Quite right! I'm with you all the way!

UWhatNow · 10/01/2023 21:46

I think it doesn’t matter what your age is, nobody should have to put up with other people’s shit.

ilovesooty · 10/01/2023 21:47

Of course it isn't an excuse. You're right.

MolesOnPoles · 10/01/2023 21:47

Totally agree. I have a family member who gets away with all kinds of crap because ‘you know what they’re like’. Yes- inconsiderate!

KitchenDiscos · 10/01/2023 21:47

YANBU

Soubriquet · 10/01/2023 21:48

“Oh I didn’t mean it. It’s just the way I am”

”well in that case, I can tell you to shut the fuck up cos that’s the way I am”

Hopefulbride18 · 10/01/2023 21:48

Yes 100% - I was just thinking about this the other day and how I find it an infuriating excuse for being mean/hurtful/rude!

KangarooKenny · 10/01/2023 21:48

Life’s too short.

ScramblePud · 10/01/2023 21:51

You’re absolutely right. It’s the same as the “oh, I’m always late, it’s just who I am” crowd.

BatshitBanshee · 10/01/2023 21:54

YANBU. I've recently freed myself from two friendships where I accepted shitty behaviour because that's how they were - they can still be that, just not with me. I haven't got the bandwidth to deal with it and I don't have to!

mycatsanutter · 10/01/2023 21:55

Totally agree , just an excuse to be a rude idiot.

AlwaysGinPlease · 10/01/2023 22:00

It means " they're a rude twat but you get used to it" but those people don't like being called out on it.

Justmuddlingalong · 10/01/2023 22:07

It's a phrase used as a cop out, by spineless idiots to avoid addressing twattish behaviour.
I prefer the "tell the truth and shame the devil" approach.

Agreed. I just think you’re more likely to put up with shit and be a people pleaser at certain ages.

“Oh I didn’t mean it. It’s just the way I am”

”well in that case, I can tell you to shut the fuck up cos that’s the way I am”

Perfect response! Although these type of people oft get very upset with a taste of their own medicine!

NeedWineNow · 10/01/2023 22:09

Agree. I used to work for someone who was appallingly rude in the office, could scream and shout and be generally upsetting. I lost count of the times that their behaviour was excused as ‘well you know what they’re like, it’s not personal, etc’. It was just not good enough that nobody tackled their behaviour head on and it was just excused.

XenoBitch · 10/01/2023 22:09

Yep, hear this a lot.
One chap posted on his FB... "I am glad I got diagnosed with Autism. It means I can I say what I want" Ok.....
And what "he wants" has been being very creepy with women.

Ludo19 · 10/01/2023 22:12

Absolutely! Fed up of people like this. "It's just how they are"....... aye an utter cunt!

Flowersinspringgrowwild · 10/01/2023 22:14

Ohhh yes! I have always said this. I worked as a cleaner at a hospital for a while whilst studying. A nurse on the ward was rude and offensive to all the cleaning staff and one day I took her task. All her colleagues jumped in to defend her "that's just how she is". So? That doesn't make it ok!

EarOutforthe · 10/01/2023 22:22

“That’s just how he/she is”

”Oh? I thought maybe they were just having an ‘off day’, thanks for clarifying that’s their normal so I don’t have to give them a second chance to be a dick to me”
