Hi so need to sort monthly direct debits out and need advice

Should I join PureGym which is a 25 minute drive from house, more in peak times but 24 hour gym and loads more classes
Much cheaper

Should I stick to David Lloyd's a 10 minute drive from house
Has an amazing spa, swimming pool, great classes etc and creche for little one

Or Virgin active which is right next door to my workplace, has a pool, good classes but they have currently closed the sauna and steam room until July because of electricity costs. Cheaper

What would you choose??

The one you will actually go to!

hulahooper2 · 09/01/2023 23:24

I would pick the easiest one to get to if money no object. Then you’re more likely to go.

Usernameisunavailable · 10/01/2023 00:36

David Lloyd is about 3 times the price of Pure Gym isn’t it? If you can afford it and it’s nearby, do that. If you’re short of cash, go to Pure Gym - if you think you’ll actually use it as it’s that much further away so less convenient. Only you know what you can afford and what works best with your lifestyle!

Thanks
Should have said I can just about afford DL although the prices went up again this month :(
A lot of people I know have left and just joined gym only or pool/gym but the fact is I love the spa and creche. Just wanted to know what people would do in my situation. It is a lot of money and I have guilt carrying on

personally I would go for the Virgin Active right next to work as I would be more likely to go before/after work. Depends on your schedule really.

1hyuny · 10/01/2023 09:25

The creche would sway it for me as I'd use the gym more on that basis, I don't have much childcare help.

yorkshirepudsx · 10/01/2023 09:26

Me personally would choose none because I am lazy.

Haha but on a serious note,
Whichever is the easiest to go to I would choose, maybe the one next to work if you go before or after work? To save you with travelling etc!

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 10/01/2023 09:30

The gym next door to work. Go during the week, before or after work or at lunch time. Gets it done within current routines. My ideal.

EndlessRain1 · 10/01/2023 09:30

I wouldn't join a gym that was a 25 drive away, I'd never go.

How far is the Virgin one from home? What are you primarily trying to achieve, me time or fitness?

Personally I couldnt' justify DL, the one near us is super expensive (almost £400 pm for a family membership (kids 5 and 9) when I checked about 4 years ago, so probably more now) and it seemed a bit tatty to me. The gym looks good, and it has a decent pool (incl an outdoor one) but the rest is tired, and it seems to be mainly somewhere for the local SAHMs to go have coffee in their activewear between school drop off and their manicures.

SlashBeef · 10/01/2023 09:30

Whatever is easiest to get into a routine of regularly going to. I'd really like to use our nearest Pure Gym but it's another 10 minutes further away than my current gym and parking is a faff. I just know I wouldn't go as often as I do now so I'm sticking to local more expensive gym.

hazelnutlatte · 10/01/2023 09:33

You are very unlikely to go regularly to a gym that's 25 min drive away so you would be wasting your money at pure gym - if you can afford to stay at David Lloyd then do that, if not then the one near your work if you normally go before / after work

Frabbits · 10/01/2023 09:39

Go to whichever one is easiest to get into a routine with - which is probably the virgin gym if it's on your way home from work or the DL if you go mainly later evenings/weekends.

Unless you are really dedicated you will always find excuses to not go to a gym 25 minutes drive away.

MatildaTheCat · 10/01/2023 09:44

I’d choose the DL which is what I have done BUT because it suits me. In reality I can’t get onto any of the classes I’m interested in because they are rammed the minute they go live for booking. Apparently the crèche is the same.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 10/01/2023 09:45

I'd stick with DL. I miss being a member so much. We moved area.

Any gym I've joined since has been rubbish in comparison.

PeopleAreToads · 10/01/2023 09:47

I was a DL member and went religiously because I loved it. After moving house couldn't justify the money or the distance, so switched to local cheap one. I definitely don't go as often, mostly because its so much busier and harder to book into classes than DL.

My cost per use is still less, but my health and weight were much better as a DL member. So really depends, if you'll use DL and can afford it, there are reasons to stay
