To not get why Whitney Houston was berated for not being black enough, but Prince and MJ weren't?

Went to see the recent film about Whitney Houston last week ( which I really enjoyed ) and it struck me how much she was criticised for selling out to a white audience, but both Prince, who purposefully wrote Purple Rain to appeal to a white audience, and Michael Jackson, who actually altered his skin colour to look more white, weren't? Makes no sense to me...

I believe MJ had vitiligo . Which may of been why he bleached his skin to cover the patches

iklboo · 05/01/2023 19:26

Because she was a woman.

mondaytosunday · 05/01/2023 19:33

Huh? MJ was totally called out for his skin and plastic surgery, though that was overshadowed by later allegations.

SmileWithADimple · 05/01/2023 19:35

Michael Jackson definitely got criticised for looking too white.

ChefsSalad · 05/01/2023 19:39

What makes you think they weren't?

Butchyrestingface · 05/01/2023 19:40

Michael Jackson, who actually altered his skin colour to look more white, weren't?

He was, wasn't he? Fuck knows he got called out - deservedly - for everything else.

Roseberry1 · 05/01/2023 19:44

Is such a shame because music shouldn't have "colour."

George Michael named his album "listen without prejudice" for this very reason.

Because she was a woman.

Yup

Justme10 · 05/01/2023 19:47

I went to see it and enjoyed it as well. The only reason I can think is because she was a successful black woman and they had to find any way to try and bring her down.

PermanentTemporary · 05/01/2023 19:48

Having had a massive crush on MJ back then (not after about 1988) id say he was constantly criticised for it!

EasterIsland · 05/01/2023 20:13

Her sex: she was a woman. How dare a woman step out of line from her prescribed role!

EightMonthsScared · 14/01/2023 12:49

Yup, they are men. Men are allowed to break 'the rules'.

PoachingEggs · 14/01/2023 12:52

She was a cokehead worth millions, I doubt she cared what anyone thought.

Pedallleur · 14/01/2023 13:11

She wasnt Aretha or Dionne or Anita Baker. She was the dream of a record company. young, beautiful, not too black and could be marketed across all platforms. Stunning voice. Prince? You wouldnt take him on, his credentials were golden as was MJ. Whitney was the forerunner for Beyonce and she has prob learnt from Whitneys mistakes. Get the power and the rights and you hold the key. Madonna was similar. once you have the power you can win everything. TaylorSwift is the latest one and she has control over everything (except Ticketmaster)

Theunamedcat · 14/01/2023 23:56

Prince was absolutely criticised for a lot but Whitney was a woman and when she was deep into drugs she became an unreliable woman not the cash cow they wanted Michael Jackson had vitiligo its well documented his brother has it too and he was ALWAYS being dragged for his plastic surgery remember wacko jacko? The oxygen tent the weird obsessed behaviour with things like the elephant man's bones and the animals the chimpanzee bubbles? He was resoundingly ridiculed

Jedsnewstar · 15/01/2023 00:00

Michael Jackson not being called out for being too white? What planet are you on?

HRTQueen · 15/01/2023 00:13

Whitney Houston didn’t write or produce her own music and she was very carefully managed from a very young age. Management even rewrote her life to make her more marketable

she had an amazing voice and the looks too and perfectly packaged to a wide audience.

Prince and MJ were certainly criticised but always had more control over their music and both hugely talented writers, producers and performers completely different type of artist to WH

Influenza · 15/01/2023 00:19

you really can’t work out why this WOMAN was criticised while those MEN weren’t? really?!

PeekAtYou · 15/01/2023 00:28

MJ was constantly dragged over the plastic surgery (nose) and skin. He was called Wacko Jacko and teased for plenty like Bubbles the Monkey.

Pixiedust1234 · 15/01/2023 01:34

I think you need to clear your cache and re-google about MJ. He was ripped apart for bleaching his skin (and his plastic surgery) over many, many years.

mamabear715 · 15/01/2023 01:43

I can't believe there's still controversy about colour. In any shape or form. It's 2023. :-(

Hellsmovie · 15/01/2023 10:04

she's a woman

What a load of BS
