To think medicine should take better in this day and age?!

Also - anyone know of alternatives to Peptic Aniseed? Or anything mint based?

They are both giving me the boak and making me feel so much worse.

I don't understand your AIBU.

It definitely should. I'm on chemo which causes constipation, I am about to drink the awful stuff from the hospital to help me go. The stuff makes me feel sick & nausea is already bad. I am sure they could make something with a nicer taste.

“Giving me the boak” - I haven’t heard that since I left Scotland! (missing the point completely!)

I agree. I can’t take Laxido without throwing up. No way is it orange flavoured!

I think the reason that a lot of liquid medicine tastes gross is either because the active ingredients can only be masked with specific, very strong flavours (hence a lot of medicines tasting of things like aniseed or peppermint). Also, I think aniseed and peppermint are, apparently, soothing for the stomach in themselves - or at least people used to think that was the case, so traditionally a lot of those kinds of medicines tasted of those things because they were supposed to be the active ingredients!

I think in the case of some prescription medicines, when it's something that can be dangerous if taken by the wrong person they deliberately make it unpalatable to decrease the chances of kids consuming it or whatever.

I do sympathise greatly, because I loathe peppermint flavoured things and although I like aniseed generally, somehow in medicines it always seems gross. If heartburn/indigestion/excess acid is your issue, Gaviscon do a berry flavoured liquid which is, while not exactly delightful, still somewhat better than the others!

I was given rehydration powders once when I had severe food poisoning, the type you have to mix with a specific amount of water. Blackcurrant flavour, they told me. Yeah, if by 'blackcurrant flavour' they meant a single blackcurrant diluted in eight litres of mop water and salt. Absolutely rank. I literally had to hold my nose and down it in one, then sit there with my eyes closed doing deep breathing to stop myself throwing up.

OP probably means 'taste' rather than 'take' and had a typo

Thanks - got it now - evidently a whole slew of people are better at reading the typo and figuring it out - it makes sense now.

If it’s laxido then I find that the flavoured ones are rank but the unflavoured literally tastes of nothing and is so much better

OnNaturesCourse · 05/01/2023 15:04

Yes. Sorry, typo. Taste better.

I went and got peppermint gaviscon instead and, puke, I think its worse.

Can't find Berry flavor anywhere. Maybe I'll check online.

I deceive liquid medicine as tasting like death in a bottle. Why cant it all taste like calpol!

I have to use gaviscon frequently and I found sticking my tongue out and pouring it on to the back of my tongue and swallowing it without it touching the front helps. I dont think there are much in the way of tastebuds back there.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 05/01/2023 15:14

OnNaturesCourse · 05/01/2023 15:23

I know. I'd love for things to taste like calpol, or the orange Ibruprofen you can get for kids.

I take laxido regularly and don't think it tastes bad.. I have the orange ones, they taste like flat Fanta in my opinion 🤷

However, has anyone tried the gaviscon tablets? The texture of those is SO disgusting. Like chewing crumbly rubbery lumps.

Strawberrypicnic · 05/01/2023 15:44

Not medicine but I take Floradix (liquid iron) and it tastes disgusting. I find you have to 'shot' it (so it doesn't touch the sides of your mouth or the front of your tongue) then chase it immediately with something strong tasting like fresh orange juice.

GoldenCupidon · 05/01/2023 15:47

Floradix tastes like blood and cold soup mixed up together, maybe with some vinegar stirred in. Used to be forced to have it before breakfast until the regime was ceased when I was then physically unable to eat breakfast due to the sickness!
