Second, I find it mildly annoying at times, but on the whole refreshing and advantageous that republicans don’t blindly follow the party line. It means they’re thinking and not a hegemony that eventually follows itself into ridiculousness.

Republicans and Democrats (Joe Manchin anyone) don't "blindly follow the party line" because there really isn't a whip system as in the UK or Ireland. Of course it is always interesting to examine what those brave mavericks actually believe in and would vote for.

I wouldn’t say they were out of danger of ridiculousness just yet. The next 24hrs show huge potential for the Republicans to both look and be ridiculous.

@Pallisers of course there’s a whip system. Nancy Pelosi was famous for cutting out anyone that didn’t tow the party line (and votes). Well until she started losing control of her party, but even then she did a pretty damn good job of control.

She had no teeth this last round, too many got out of control including Manchin… She had a bigger problem with the squad, but largely buckled to them to keep her power.

the whip system in the US bears no relation to the whip system in the UK.
