Naked or not naked?

Please settle an argument between DH and I about nakedness when having a professional massage...

YABU - Of course you should be completely naked when having a professional massage, the towel covers your bits. The massage therapist has seen it all before and doesn't need clothing getting in the way and it's not like they're gonna be massaging your bits anyway

YANBU - Of course you don't get completely naked, you keep your underwear on underneath the towel. The massage therapist does not want to accidentally touch your bare bum/genitals as they work their way up your legs

My DP and I had same conversation I was horrified to discover he was going naked, pretty sure that made some therapists uncomfortable. I've since insisted he wear shorts.

I keep pants on but I was once asked to remove everything. I didn’t, I kept my pants on.

I'm mildly amused that of the current 790 votes, 110 people are getting completely nude.

But also somewhat horrified for the poor therapists who have to put up with these people.

Unless I specifically have a glute issue, I'd be quite weirded out if a therapist started pulling my knickers about and started to massage my bum. Surely that's something you have to be very specific about with the therapist and isn't a standard thing to expect from a massage??

I suppose it depends on what sort of professional massage it is.

Unless it's a knocking shop with a happy ending disguised as a spa then of course you keep your bloody knickers on.

Ask the masseuse but generally I go naked with the towel covering, getting a bit of a bum massage as part of a full body/sports massage is perfect.

I've only known one masseuse say to keep underwear on having had dozens over the years.

If it's a full body massage, I'd be upset if they missed such a significant section of muscles as to ignore the glutes and/or upper thighs. Full body should be everything other than genitals and breasts- neither of which are muscular.

I think the biggest thing to take away from this is that I'd massage therapists specifically want you to keep underwear on, they should say so. I would also say they should provide some- I wouldn't be comfortable staying in my swimsuit.

Imo glutes are one of the most important muscle groups to work on. They work hard, and it takes a long time for people to notice there is an issue with them. If you aren't getting your glutes massaged (which can be done effectively with pants on through the towel) then you aren't getting the full benefit of what massage can offer.

I had a back massage in summer. She went into the glutes area. Bare bum. Wasnt expecting it. !! But other ones I had didnt do that.

Maybe stop wearing such excessively large underwear that your only option is to be entirely naked? Even if you were entirely covered from your bellybutton to your knees, no underwear I’ve ever seen should be so thick that it can’t be massaged through. How strange.

I have a massage fortnightly and I have my hips/thighs/glutes done with my underwear on…and I’m not wearing a thong either.

Your choice to wear exceptionally impractical undergarments doesn’t outweigh the right of those massaging you to feel safe and comfortable in their workplace. If I decided to go naked in a swimming pool (for example) because I failed to bring appropriate swimwear then I’d be asked to leave - this is no different.

I've never asked a client to leave because they aren't wearing underwear. It's completely fine for a client to be naked underneath the towel. Everything I'm not working on is covered, so why would it be an issue? In my 20+ years of being a massage therapist, there has not been an obvious correlation between naked massage and inappropriate behaviour.

Thanks for confirming this, there's just no reason for the nasty, judgemental comments is there.

I have once been provided with big, baggy paper undies which the masseuse can easily move aside, that wouldn't be possible with my normal fitted underwear, and as for the op's suggestion it's done over the underwear? That would be horrific with the oils wouldn't it!

You keep knickers on unless you got to a therapist is happy for you want to take them off.

I take mine off for a massage by another but they are not trained etc. I've never come across a registered thearpist that would want their client to goo fully naked.

It is your choice along with the m/therapist
