I think I may have had one once as a child but I don't remember. Freaking out a bit.

I had my first in my 20s. Not had one since (am in 40s).

minidancer · 28/12/2022 20:50

Take lysine, 1000mg every day

GracePooleslaugh · 28/12/2022 20:50

I've had years between cold sores in the past and then other times I've had a few close together. I tend to get them if I'm run down.

I don't think anyone can tell you how it will go. Try zovirax at the first sign.

excelledyourself · 28/12/2022 20:52

I used to get them quite often as child. Not so much now.

I took L lysine for a while and I think that makes a big difference. Been ages since I've taken that though, so who knows. But I'll be buying some in now that you've reminded me, and I'll start taking when I feel the tingle, at least.

Zampa · 28/12/2022 20:52

Sadly, once you've got the virus, it stays in your body until triggered (when you're run down, for example).

In the meantime, I recommend;

Aciclovir tablets
Herpotherm pen
Virulite

NotTerfNorCis · 28/12/2022 20:52

Sorry, but you will... if you get a cold, allergy or otherwise run down.

thelobsterquadrille · 28/12/2022 20:54

Not necessarily.

You have the virus for life but that doesn't mean you'll get them all the time. Some people just get one and never again, others never even know they have the virus, and some suffer regularly.

Psm92 · 28/12/2022 21:41

Also, I've got this after kissing a man I went on a second date with a few days ago. Coincidence? He didn't have any cold sores, as far as I could see anyway...

I've got one just now - first time in at least 15 years. Bloody sinusitis 😡

I got my first from indiscriminate kissing at an Edinburgh Hogmanay street party over 30 years ago and have had reoccurrences maybe half a dozen times, mostly in the first few years after infection.

Zovirax cream has worked quite well for me this time. It started to tingle on Christmas day and hasn't amounted to much.

LadyLolaRuben · 28/12/2022 21:51

You can have the virus for years before a coldsore is triggered. They tend to get less severe with each one - virus severity kind of burns out. Antihistamines can help as soon as you get the tingle then apply cream as PP suggest

minidancer · 28/12/2022 21:51

You could have had the virus for years and it's just lay dormant so it might not be from him

kayd90 · 28/12/2022 21:52

I get them i can go months or years without getting them. As another poster said I tend to get them if I'm poorly/rundown.

EmmaC78 · 28/12/2022 21:52

Lysine does help as a few people have mentioned

VestaTilley · 28/12/2022 21:53

I get them when I’m run down, but not as often as I get mouth ulcers. Maybe once every year/eighteen months. Just have some Zovirax or equivalent in the medicine cupboard. And don’t touch/kiss newborn babies when you have one.

Justhereforaibu1 · 28/12/2022 21:56

I might be wrong but I belive the first one is much worse. I'd never had one until about 25 years old and it was horrific, so bad my mouth wouldn't close, huge from my top lip to my nose. Hadn't a clue what it was until I went to the doctor. Subsequently had a few, always at the original site and although awful nowhere like that first one. I got the boots sore cold machine and haven't had one since, have had the tingle but doesn't go any further. They don't sell it any more but if you Google it alternatives come up, expensive though

porpy · 28/12/2022 21:59

Not necessarily. If you remember having one as a child it might just be a recurrence of a really old infection. A good majority of the adult population have caught the oral herpes virus it’s just a case of how good your immune system is at suppressing it or not.

Hesma · 28/12/2022 22:08

I find Zovirax rubbish but cymex great if that’s any help

Motelschmotel · 28/12/2022 22:10

Unfortunately herpes is like glitter. It’ll always pop up again when you think you’re done with the last of it. Sorry.

Mary46 · 28/12/2022 22:27

Op they can be so sore. Mine used to bleed. Awful. Thank god havent had in while. Friend swears by lysine. Licorice balm good too
