AIBU to think noisy building work starting at 7am this morning isn’t on?

We’ve had building work from a neighbour all year, usually at unsociable hours such as evenings and early weekends. It was happening all Christmas Eve as well.

I was hoping to have a bit of respite over the Christmas break, looking forward to lazing around and watching films and playing with DS but it started again at 7 this morning, banging, sawing, and it’s so loud! No chance we will be able to chill and watch the tv as won’t be able to hear it over it.

added to that it’s chucking it down so hardly weather to go for a nice walk to get away from it either.

whenever I text about it they just say oh yeah sorry it won’t be long.

AIBU to think this is totally not on?

I’d check your local council regulations and keep a diary, many also screenshots of your texts and speak to the council, but I suspect they could only limit it to say 8-8 mon - Fri and 8-12 ish on Sat.

@luckylavender yea but I did go on to say check local authority

And actually Ip only said it was banging and sawing....so a handsaw?? Not much can be done about that

thelobsterquadrille · 28/12/2022 09:11

Unfortunately it's not illegal to be a shit neighbour.

Most councils will say 8am is the earliest for noisy work so you could approach it from that angle.

Embelline · 28/12/2022 09:17

@TheLittlestLightOnTheXmasTree its definitely not a handsaw it’s much much louder than that so maybe I’m
mistaken that it’s a saw.

ive just checked the council website and it says for contractors 8am at the earliest and no work past 6.30pm on weeknights, no work on Sundays. I don’t know why I didn’t think to check before! They’ve basically been working in the non permitted hours all throughout the year, sometimes up to 10pm at night!

Well now you know!! Go on over to speak to them

Devoutspoken · 28/12/2022 09:22

Inconsiderate wankers - I'd be requesting they keep to council regulated hours

LolaSmiles · 28/12/2022 09:30

Now you've got the noisy work time for your area, go and speak to them because they're operating outside of it

Our builders never started before 8.00am and never played music. I thought 8.00am was at least a bylaw if not a law.

I’d bet your local council says noisy work should not be before 8am.

Go and speak to the neighbours, or report to your environmental services dept. It’s incredibly inconsiderate.

gogohmm · 28/12/2022 09:37

It's a normal working day and if you are diy and have time off work it's the perfect day. 7am is early though, 8.30 is more reasonable

Devoutspoken · 28/12/2022 09:39

Gogo, we're not allowed to do noisy DIY before 8 according to our local council regulations, I wouldn't anyway because I'm a considerate neighbour

bibbif · 28/12/2022 10:07

Isn't it 8am they can start though?

bibbif · 28/12/2022 10:10

work has never started near me before 8am & there is lots of building work always going in.

bibbif · 28/12/2022 10:12

I wouldn't anyway because I'm a considerate neighbour

exactly most people want to have an ok relationship with their neighbours, not be the local dick.
