Does anyone find Christmas Day meals awkward?

Perhaps it’s just me…I’m not a fan of sitting around the table etc and the unspoken pressure that sometimes comes with it?
Perhaps I’m just weird..!

Do you not sit around the table for any other meals?

Lookingforwardtospringtime · 25/12/2022 20:05

@AnotherAppleThief Yes, sometimes, but mainly relaxed at home

No, it's the best part of the day for us.

DH cooks and me and the adult 'kids' dig in, then we clear the table and play board games.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 25/12/2022 20:09

Where do you normally eat? Confused

ImAvingOops · 25/12/2022 20:10

I think there's a lot of pressure having made a big Christmas dinner, to have scintillating conversation and a perfect day.

gerbal · 25/12/2022 20:11

I agree OP. A lot of Xmas day seems a bit fake and forced but it's also a lovely day so I don't mind too much.

Spck · 25/12/2022 20:12

No if you feel awkward you would have to question your general social skills. Sorry it’s not that big of a deal and if you find it so you need to work on that

ZeroFuchsGiven · 25/12/2022 20:12

I mean surely you are with your family and not strangers off the street, I dont understand how eating with your family can be awkward.

Blimey! You are a lucky woman.

I understand OP. I don't think you need to question your social skills either. Always a relief to get xmas day done, except for ones I was lucky enough to spend with friends.

Lookingforwardtospringtime · 25/12/2022 20:33

@EmmaAgain22 Phew, not just me then!
Why awkward for you?

Id rather shit in my hands and clap than spend Christmas with people I dont like. I'm far from lucky but I do love my family and dont find spending time with them awkward Confused

SheWoreYellow · 25/12/2022 20:35

Are you having people to lunch that you don’t really want to spend the day with, I wonder?

GoodVibesHere · 25/12/2022 20:37

Yes I find it awkward, I can't put my finger on why but it is. You all have to comment on the lovely food, everyone's a bit tired, the pressure to enjoy it all. To be honest the present opening is akward too in a way. I'm so relieved it's done for another year!

Disapointednelly · 25/12/2022 20:38

Oh I internally cringe when my family clink their glasses together saying merry Christmas mainly because only my DM seems into it. I’m not a huge Christmas person though and I find the pressure of getting the day perfect too much

Ruibies · 25/12/2022 20:55

I agree - with my family (parents and siblings) it's something I want to get over and done with asap. With DH and DS it's lovely. Depends on the people and definitely family can be awkward.

I love mine too

the dynamic has been problematic over the years for things like dinners.

Ironically, dinner conversation is sometimes easier with a cousin - doesn't come every xmas - who I don't like! But we know how to do the sparkly smile and event dinner table IYSWIM.

i should add, xmas with friends, my sister was also there.

I don't know what the Confused face is about btw.

caroleanboneparte · 25/12/2022 21:00

I'd rather have had my meal with strangers off the street than some of my family!

I'm counting down the minutes until we get the house back.

Normal family life is stressful enough.

too boring to address

I'm not a family meal person

I'm not family oriented generally though, I don't have kids

we went out for xmas dinner once, my dad was the last to be ready, he walked into the hall and found me, mum, sis all looking at our ipads.

I burst out laughing and told him "this is modern family life". He was not amused. 😂 We had a lovely meal out though! Xmas dinner out is cool. As a 4, that was our most fun xmas easily.

EmmaAgain22 · 25/12/2022 21:06

As I type, my mum, who needs hearing aids but won't admit it, is listening to an xmas channel on VERY LOUD.

this time tomorrow, if transport is okay - I'll be home, yay!
