To tell DH to not accept new job

coclouroftheveins · 23/12/2022 22:35

DH is seriously considering a job offer in Jersey and said he will commute to and from Jersey daily. The job will be Monday to Friday. AIBU to think this idea sis stupid and bound to fail.

OP posts:
Kinneddar · 23/12/2022 22:36

Hard to say when you haven't said where the commute is from

YorkshireIndie · 23/12/2022 22:37

How long is his commute and how would he do it? What happens if there is inclement weather? Does he get a pay rise and how much would be taken up with the commute?

These are all questions I would be asking. I get where you are coming from

TokyoSushi · 23/12/2022 22:41

Where from?
How?
How long would it take?
Is it actually a sensible thing to do?
How much would it cost?
What's the job?
Would the job greatly enhance your life?
Would it cause a huge inconvenience?
Etc etc

Daisymay2 · 23/12/2022 22:58

The return fare is about £100 per day- out of taxed income! More expensive from Southampton than London.
Didn't one of the airlines flying to the Channel Islands go bust a few years ago, what happens if the remaining ones collapse?

cavily1806 · 23/12/2022 22:59

OP, if you live in Fife, pls PM me

steff13 · 23/12/2022 23:00

Is it New Jersey, because that would be quite a commute from anywhere in the UK?

Stompythedinosaur · 23/12/2022 23:10

Commuting daily is clearly unfeasible

PonyPatter44 · 23/12/2022 23:12

Won't he get some sort of relocation allowance? Failing that, he could stay Mon-Thurs, and fly home on Fridays.

What sort of day rate/salary are they offering?

thelobsterquadrille · 23/12/2022 23:15

You haven't given much information to go on.

Where do you live now?
What's the journey time?
How much will it cost - will he have to pay or will his workplace help?
Is the pay rise worth it?
Is this the only job prospect or are there other options closer to home?

KarmaStar · 23/12/2022 23:51

As pp have asked, what is the commute ?
You do not own him you cannot tell him what to do.
Discuss , yes,dictate,no.

RoseslnTheHospital · 24/12/2022 00:03

Is the job really going to cover £50 to £100 daily commuting costs?? So £1000 to £2000 each and every month? Seems mad. Maybe a weekly commute, staying in Jersey Mon to Thurs is more realistic, but you'd obviously not see him much!

Testina · 24/12/2022 00:33

Depends. Do you live in St Lawrence?

JellyBeanFactory · 24/12/2022 00:50

Very much depends on where you live!

Guernsey to jersey 20mins
Southampton to Jersey 50mjns
Gatwick to Jersey 1hr
Birmingham / Manchester 1hr 20

Time and cost of travel matters hugely. .

bumpertobumper · 24/12/2022 00:51

Do you mean commute weekly? Daily sounds difficult...

Lemonlady22 · 24/12/2022 05:57

Gosh no, I worked in a hospital that regularly had a surgeon not turn up due to flights from Jersey cancelled due to weather. He only worked one day a week on the mainland too!

Shoxfordian · 24/12/2022 06:00

Why is it stupid? Where do you live now? Is it more money?

girlmom21 · 24/12/2022 06:45

Is there a possibility of WFH? What's the pay?
