To miss England so much this time of year

I live abroad, have been homesick for a while, but autumn & Christmas is the worst. I just keep remembering the way it was…am sure it might not be like that anymore? But Britain definitely does Christmas well.

We lived in Australia for years and Christmas wasn't the same, but after a couple of years trying to have a UK Christmas and failing miserable, we embraced the differences. Can you do that?

It’s been very wet, very cold and now very wet again. It’s grey all the time. And dark by 4pm. I’d love to somewhere warm.

It’s quite depressing this year - it feels forced IMO.

It's fantastic as always. Lights, events, special food and drinks. We loaded up on wine yesterday, did a lights trail at the local EH site last night, going to the pub tonight with friends, taking small gifts and crackers. Lots more

You are seeing things through rose tinted glasses. The UK has managed to self-sabotage spectacularly over the past decade and things are pretty awful for a significant portion of the population. For myself, and other people I know, there is a real sense of helplessness as we feel no way we can bring about any change and we did not vote for this. Sure, lots of countries are experiences economic downturn, but the UK is now also deeply divided and increasingly insular. Despite being (for now) one of the richest nations in the world, public services are falling apart and working people cannot afford to live. And it is freezing! Ho, ho, ho
