Am I giving my son too many vitamins?

I know it’s a bit of a silly question but I’m worried I might be.
I’m trying to keep him healthy over this season of bugs and viruses.
He's 4 years old.

He currently has:
Sambucol in liquid form (Elderberry)
One generic kids multivitamin gummy
One vitamin D3 gummy

My mum mentioned she’s worried he’ll ‘have too much’ especially as I’m giving him extra D3. But I thought this time of year especially, it’s important.

Depends on what’s in them & what amounts, the body just excretes excess water soluble vitamins so you are just wasting money giving too many of those rather than causing any harm, assuming they are age appropriate, but there are some fat soluble vitamins that could be harmful if having too much.

Having too much of some vitamins can be harmful. Keep to the dose recommended on the label, and be careful not to give your child 2 supplements at the same time. For example, do not give them cod liver oil and vitamin drops because cod liver oil also contains vitamins A and D

I would probably alternate them, one each day. Giving too much just means he is producing expensive urine.

Look at the NHS link a pp posted. Cross reference against the bottles. Ask pharmacist to assist if unsure.

Yes. Unless there are dietary concerns, he doesn't need all this. Listen to the Zoe podcast on this very issue

If you must, give him a multivitamin. But no need for all of this. Concentrate on good fresh food

Vitamin D (in the northern hemisphere) maybe one multi vit and a good healthy diet.

A load of multicoloured veg will do so much more for them than a specific vitamin.

LittleMrsPerfect · 21/12/2022 20:40

If the multivitamin also contains vitamin C and D then yes your giving too much.

dementedpixie · 21/12/2022 20:43

Not necessarily too much vitamin D

Nhs says:

Children aged 1 to 10 years should not have more than 50 micrograms (2,000 IU) a day. Infants under 12 months should not have more than 25 micrograms (1,000 IU) a day.
