aibu: to cancel Christmas as I have this blasted illness going around

I KNOW I'm unreasonable but this year has been shit.

I don't have family and am spending Xmas with an ex as they can't get home for Christmas with strikes / work and other commitments.

The house isn't decorated as it's a HMO and none of the others wanted too as they're leaving. And within the last 24 hours I think I've developed either strep or the worlds most horrific cold. My throat is swollen, patchy, bleeding in parts where its so dry and I can't swallow.

Tried to call GP and there were 40 people in front of me and I fell asleep after 52 minutes because I'm that ill.

Will be calling 111 later as I've seen on here people have had ABs prescribed over the phone ?

It just feels like the dump on top of a shit year tbh. I'm ready to hibernate and forget all about it.

To add to this, there's no Xmas food in because it was meant to be done today but everything on Google is saying if it is strep its highly contagious and to stay away from people. So unless I get ABS i wont be having said ex over anyway and wont have anything festive to munch on😭😭😭

no need to put yourself out when you're ill, take it easy and rest. If you get the chance, do an online shop so you can have some food in the freezer in case you feel a bit better on Xmas day and have something to eat with minimal effort. Curl up on the sofa and watch rubbish tv and comfort films. hope you feel better soon.

NoseyNellie · 20/12/2022 10:14

Can ex host you?

petalsandstars · 20/12/2022 10:16

I’m feeling rubbish and managed to get an online food delivery for tonight as Christmas may well be cancelled here too. Do keep on with the drs though. Ours will prescribe over the phone so it’s then just a trip to the pharmacy

Nootella · 20/12/2022 10:27

@petalsandstars where abouts are you because i have a tesco, morrisons and asda all within 20 min walk to me and none of them have any slots available until after Xmas now:( .

@NoseyNellie I mean they could host me but they have a weakened immune system due to an autoimmune disease. Covid put them in the hospital last year so I don't particularly want to give them strep especially when I know how much they struggle with their medication already. Would you happily host someone with something so contagious ?

@ghjklo I know I need to focus on feeling better but it all just feels cumulative. Building up to a shit end.

I am very ready for a new year and new opportunities. ✨️
Thank you I hope I feel better soon too x

You could probably get an online Morrisons delivery from Amazon before Christmas

TheYearOfSmallThings · 20/12/2022 10:35

Well it's up to you, but basically you have a winter virus (not unusual) and will be better in 5 days time. Personally I would put up a few decorations, plan to hit the supermarket in a few days time to get nice food, call anyone who is around to arrange a drink/walk in those days after Christmas...

HouseIsOnFire · 20/12/2022 10:36

You could try the sainsbury's chop chop app? Or uber/deliveroo for grocery deliveries?

Sorry, that does sound awful 😪 the bugs and colds circulating this year are horrific!

petalsandstars · 20/12/2022 10:36

Nootella I’m in the midlands and can get Asda still for later tonight or tomorrow.

if your area slots are not available could you ask a friend if they could pick you up a few bits. I know I would if someone else was feeling this bad.

Nootella · 20/12/2022 11:01

@TheYearOfSmallThings there isn't anyone around. I'm a student the house is empty until late Jan when people come back.

Same as last year and the year before. I unfortunately can't help my shitty family circumstances that led to this and me being alone.

But thanks x

@petalsandstars I'm in Hampshire in a student location and it's empty rn as everyone left days ago due to the strikes.

Not even the university is working at capacity rn and the estrangement team and wellbeing service aren't even open so I couldn't ask for help even if I wanted too :(

Speaking to said ex now, they said they may be willing to drop a few things off at my door but Xmas is pretty much off as they're travelling back home this week to see family in hospital so can't risk it.

Have a look at Iceland delivery, I was meant to do my Xmas shop yesterday but tested positive for covid on Saturday, no one to help get it for me.
They had loads of delivery slots right up until Friday, mine is being delivered tomorrow.

I managed to get a delivery booked in yesterday for Wednesday and it was the only slot left. My area doesn’t have any asda delivery slots till a few days after newyear. I could have done a click and collect if push came to it as i am fortunate I could have got my mum or MIL to take me. I am sorry u are feeling so run down op and have no one to help

lanthanum · 20/12/2022 17:31

I'm sure there must be someone around who would do you a food shop, even if they don't know you - the problem is just finding them. At the height of covid plenty of places had groups of volunteers who would do it, but they've probably stopped being so organised now. I know in our village a post on the village Facebook page will usually still elicit a volunteer to pick up a prescription or some emergency rations.

It may be worth checking whether there are click-and-collect slots if there aren't any delivery slots.

Is there any sort of international student society at your uni? Those students are more likely to still be around. If there's a chaplaincy or similar, try contacting them and asking if they know of anyone who can help.

Hopefully your ex will be able to drop you enough to keep you going, but you might need someone to get your antibiotics when prescribed.

it’s only the 20th

Get yourself some Lemsip capsules. You do not need to be ringing the GP for goodness sake. Just wrap up and sleep it off.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/12/2022 17:38

A good one for getting food delivered at short notice is the co op. You can’t amend the order once placed though.

Hi Op

If it is strep and you can get antibiotics then you should start feeling better quite quickly. Maybe don't cancel xmas just just delay by a day or two

Good luck...
