So fairly minor issue but trying to understand how to handle future situations better. My DD is 8 and her cousin is 7 -lives in a different country. We try to meet my SIL at least once a year and enjoy seeing the girls bond (my 2 and her). Now my DD is fairly mature and sensitive for her age so does tend to react to social situations in a more whining/'its not fair' manner. DD (8) gets on fairly well with cousin but when they visit we do get bouts of secret complaining/whining that cousin is being mean. Example: Playing dolls and cousin says this doll of yours is really ugly. Or if she is getting time on the iPad - she makes sure my DD knows she is playing on 'HER' iPad and my rules don't apply to her (i.e no screen time). Overall, I would like my daughter to try & deal with this type of behaviour on her own without coming to whine to me. There was one incident that really irked me though. SIL and her family were visiting us from abroad & my DD's cousin's uncle (not related to my DD) came to dinner and brought her some gifts. Later that evening, cousin brought the gift bag, sat across DD & myself, looked my DD straight in the eye and slowly took out each gift unwrapped it, smiled and put it back in the bag. I know, we are dealing with a 7 year old (also only child) who watches a lot of odd barbie youtube videos - but the calculate d nature of the act really rubbed me the wrong way. I squeezed my DD's hand to tell her I understood and to keep her calm.
AIBU to get annoyed at a 7 year old or is this normal behaviour and they all grow out of it at some point? Any tips on how to address this with my daughter? Thank you!
