To ask for help with finding a sofa to fit my room?

My house is lovely but due to widened doorways, there is no length of wall to fit a sofa against. Currently my existing sofa is placed across the room (through lounge/diner) which works as a divider to create the separate areas, but doesnt work as I cant get my wheelchair past it. Please excuse my rather crude attempt at a diagram using paint (which was like using an etch a sketch!) - the deep red rectangle is my existing sofa, which as you can see, only fits where it is but due to the hearth I cant squeeze my chair past. Not so much of an issue at the moment, but my mobility is decreasing so I need a rethink.

The end of the lounge nearer the kitchen has a dining table (large grey rectangle) and although it looks like a long length of wall to fit a sofa, there is cabling boxed in running the full length, so I am unable to fit furniture against the wall there. I was thinking of Besta wall storage hung low like a side board there. Plus, there are no sockets (phone, tv, electric) to have tele at that end.

I need seating for at least 2, probably 3. I have my own riser recliner chair at a right angle to the window and opposite the tele (small grey rectangle in the corner). At the moment when we have visitors, it is awkward trying to fit everyone in with the space they need (DD ASD). I was thinking of a corner sofa, or a chaise sofa, with one arm along the small wall labelled 135, with the main sofa no longer than 175. But, I am struggling to find one! I have tried the design your own sites, but they are still too big.

Please can anyone help? I am unable to visit many shops to browse, and my online search has become overwhelming Sad

Something like this? Small sofa with chaise: www.argos.co.uk/product/3347739

Dimensions in the attached picture - it's not clear in the ad, so someone asked them to clarify.

Hi, just trying to have a look at your diagram and work it out haha. Any chance you could take a photo of the space to make it easier to visualise.
past the dining table is the kitchen area so that part is a no go?
it really is a pain finding a sofa. I know ikea so quite small sofas and corner sofas which I think you can build to suit your room to an extent. Other wise, could you get a couple of small “cuddle chairs” along with your am chair to put in and arrange? You could have one of the eats next to the window. Is it a ceiling to floor window?

sorry I think it’s called snuggle chair not cuddle chair, they are a good in between size if you have this and a small 2 seater. I’ve just done a quick google but obviously you can find them much cheaper or more pricey depending on what you want.

Thanks @GetOffTheRoof I think that may be too small though. Ideally I would like something that my DDs can stretch out on for film nights - my thinking behind the corner sofa is that one can sit in the corner with legs outstretched on to chaise, and the other at the other end of the sofa taking up 2 seats with legs curled on couch. If that makes sense, I am really not good at explaining!

My original plan was to get a 2 seater recliner sofa to go pretty much where my sofa is now but not be as long. Then get a nice armchair to go in front of the 135 wall. I just want it to look stylish!

I like that @MotivateMe but every sofa like that I have looked at is simply too big. It is the narrow width of the wall beside the door that is the problem. Because the doors have been widened. I can't do as my neighbours have done and have a sofa there.

I'm not at home at the moment (another hospital stay Sad so no photos at the moment. It's not a floor to ceiling window, its about 3/4 I would say, with a radiator underneath.

I'm unclear then - I thought you wanted a corner sofa no bigger than 175x135? You'll only get 2 seats across in that width when accounting for the arm and back of the sofa?

ClarissaPoncissa · 17/12/2022 17:18

I love that thank you! I think with footstools that may work Flowers Do you think a chair (snuggle or wide arm chair) would look too much if positioned beside it? We have various professionals visiting quite often, and I would hate for either them or DD to feel uncomfortable squished on to the same sofa.

A corner sofa would be the ideal if I could get one to fit those dimensions, but I don't think I can.

Apologies if I'm not making much sense, that would be the pain meds Blush

Don't worry!

With that sofa you liked, you'll only have 31cm along the 135cm wall to work with?

Most footstools are designed to be used as seats these days. Could the visitors sit on one of those and leave the sofa for your DD?

Yarnosaura · 17/12/2022 17:57

I've got quite limited lounge space and have 2 IKEA Ektorp 2 seat sofas, they're pretty good for lounging on but have a smaller footprint than many sofas.

Do you have room in the dining room for a lightweight armchair (maybe a tub chair or an IKEA Poang) that can be moved to the lounge space when needed? That way, most of the time there's a sofa for dd and you have your chair.
