Virus in 9 year old? Worrying or being over-anxious?

Before anyone wonders, I have called 111 about this already, but I was wondering I'd this is maybe a weird virus doing the rounds and if anyone else has come across similar with their children?

My 9 year old daughter vomited at school yesterday morning and I was called to collect her. When I got there, she seemed fine - chirpy, no temperature, said she felt okay but she'd been dizzy and got sick.

On the way home she felt dizzy and vomited again. And after that she seemed fine till the evening, when she started feeling dizzy again.

At 5 in the morning I woke up because she'd woken up feeling sick and vomited in her bed - literally all over the covers. She was unsteady on her feet and said she felt like everything was spinning. After that she's been on and off the same - fine for a bit, then suddenly getting these dizzy spells and feeling sick or vomiting. No temperature, no other symptoms to note, although she's a bit pale. She had a bit of a cough and cold about a week ago but it cleared up quickly.

I called 111 and they said it's a virus, she's okay to be looked after at home, normal measures, etc. But it is a really strange one - she's perfectly fine for an hour or so and then seems to get these attacks of dizziness and gets giddy and sick. Certain things (like reading or screens) seem to make it worse.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

(Not worrying about Strep A, btw!)

Covid test?

Jourdain11 · 17/12/2022 13:14

Did one yesterday - negative.

Sorry, I should have said that in my original post as well.

This sounds a bit like my 7 year old although he was only sick twice, but would complain about dizziness and earache every so often.

This started with ear pain through the night on Tuesday and he seems mostly back to normal today although has dull ears that are annoying him.

That sounds like norovirus or food poisoning to me (I get those a lot). You tend to feel a lot better after vomiting and then the nausea slowly builds up again.

Mischance · 17/12/2022 13:17

Is she eating OK? Does she have a temperature?

Jourdain11 · 17/12/2022 13:21

No temperature, and no diarrhoea and stomach ache/cramps either (which I'd expect with food poisoning or normal tbh!). She seems to have a normal appetite in between and she's been eating fine, although I've only been letting her have plain foods.

Any headache ?

TinaYouFatLard · 17/12/2022 13:26

Sounds possibly like an inner ear issue. I know someone who was like this with labrynthitis.

Largethighsbadeyes · 17/12/2022 13:28

Sounds ear related to me as well.

I've had norovirus countless times and never been dizzy. Doesn't sound viral to me tbh

Fleurty · 17/12/2022 13:30

I have recurring sinus/inner ear problems and often get periods of dizziness and nausea after a cold. The nausea is a result of the dizziness rather than anything more sinister.

Jourdain11 · 17/12/2022 13:35

Yeah, I'm not at all convinced it's a virus. With noro or a sickness bug you'd generally be off colour in between, but she has no temperature and seems alright in between. I was just a bit worried because the sickness and unsteadiness seems to come on so suddenly and 20 mins later she's suddenly okay! She did say she had a bit of a headache though.

Will look up labyrinthitis! Not sure if she has any earache though. She hasn't mentioned it and she's sleeping at the moment.

Looked it up and it does sound likely although she's woken up now and says her ears are fine. But on NHS it says it can also be without earache/hearing loss. She's feeling dizzy and sick again now, so I've got her lying down in our room in the dark with a bucket! I'm not sure whether (or where) to seek further guidance but I guess I'll just see how she goes for the rest of the day. I'm just worried about so much vomiting but at least she's eating and drinking okay in between.

Also, no one else has it - I feel like if it was a sickness bug, DD1 and DS would also have it, or it would be going round her class or sth.
