What is this about...

AIBU with this ?!
Some friends said it to me lately and I'm surprised at friends saying it to be honest.
Or am I expecting too much that people just be nice and say 'you're looking great'.

My friends don't have much experience with pregnant people so maybe they don't understand how it feels and its normal chat, but it bugs me, of course I'm getting bigger with a growing baby.... but why do people feel the need to comment when pregnant ?!

People just say stupid stuff. They might be jealous you're pregnant or just immature or something. YANBU

hellosunshineagainxxx · 16/12/2022 22:21

Its just a thing people say, doesn't mean anything

Nursejackie1 · 16/12/2022 22:22

I loved it, I don’t know why but I also loved having an enormous bump so having it acknowledged didn’t bother me at all, even all the jokes about how many have you got in there etc.
I imagine people mean it in a wow look how your baby is growing kind of way, not anything to do with your actual weight.

KarmaStar · 16/12/2022 22:23

I guess it's like when you're a child and older relatives always comment ' haven't you grown ! " 😀 and it makes children squirm with embarrassment .
I don't think it's meant with any malice,as in saying you've got fat,I think it means it looks like your pregnancy is going well and baby is growing as expected.
Congratulations anyway,I hope you have a healthy pregnancy and baby.💐

bakewellbride · 16/12/2022 22:25

Yanbu I hated it too! "Wow you're huge!" Oh fuck off!

Bizarrely I also had comments on the other end of the scale and I somehow hated them more. "Oh you're so tiny! There's hardly a bump at all" etc. Little did those people realise I had a growth scan looming and they were just making me feel like shit.

Seriously if someone is pregnant it should just be "you look amazing / glowing / really well" or just nothing.

HeddaGarbled · 16/12/2022 22:27

I’m amazed anyone dares open their mouths at all anymore, the telling-off they get for kindly-meant idle remarks.

tickticksnooze · 16/12/2022 22:28

Why would someone tell you that you look "amazing" just because they know you're pregnant?! Bit egotistical.

Whataretheodds · 16/12/2022 22:43

It's just a thing people say.
They're being celebratory, it's considered positive because it implies the baby is healthy. It's an expression of excitement at the progression of your pregnancy.

It's probably not very useful to think of it as being said with anything other than positive intent. ----

RampantIvy · 16/12/2022 22:45

I agree with you @HeddaGarbled

DuplicateUserName · 16/12/2022 22:48

I think people taking offence to this sort of thing is a fairly 'modern' problem, possibly because of the obesity problem with have nowadays and the invention of the phrase 'body shaming'.

But to some, 'you're getting big' is still meant in a nice way when talking about a growing pregnancy.

DuplicateUserName · 16/12/2022 22:49

And yes, I wouldn't tell a friend she looked amazing when pregnant if (like I did) she looked pale and sickly for example. I just wouldn't say anything!

Exactly- they are saying ‘wow! You are cooking that baby well!

they are not saying ‘hey fatty boom boom’

RunnerDuck2020 · 16/12/2022 23:35

I would take it as a compliment - surely they just mean wow isn’t the baby growing well, you’ll be due soon, how exciting etc 😂

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 16/12/2022 23:36

You’re being super precious. They aren’t calling you fat. They’re noting your bump growth. The end.

Talapia · 16/12/2022 23:41

You are growing a baby therefore you will get bigger. I doubt anyone is saying it to upset you.

MrsJackRackham · 16/12/2022 23:53

People can't do right for doing wrong. If nobody acknowledged the fact you were pregnant you'd be on here moaning about that. Folk just use standard phrases to make small talk.
You are getting big. You're growing a human. Own it.
