Or does every small town stink of smoke?

I drive for a living and I have noticed that as I enter smallish towns and villages the smell of wood smoke hits me and when I exit the vehicle I then stink of bonfire. It’s not bonfire it’s wood burners in peoples homes. When did people think it was a good idea to go back to the old days of smog and smoke? What’s it doing to our health and our children? It’s getting worse now with the energy crisis but these things are thousands to install and when do you even recoup the money? I just don’t get it. And yes I think it’s mighty selfish to use one. And these people act like they give a shit about the environment.

I live in a small town and can't say I've noticed this at all.

FeelWellEnoughToTellYou · 11/12/2022 08:45

I have noticed this since we've been having frosty mornings. Thought the very same as I put the bins out just now.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 11/12/2022 08:45

I'll take 'things that never happened' for a 100

MythosK · 11/12/2022 08:46

If you drive for a living, do you use an eletric car?

Luxurysleuth007 · 11/12/2022 08:47

I notice it often in countryside places. I really don’t mind it all- certainly beats the smell of car fumes and vape fog I encounter daily in my city.

chocolateasaltyballs22 · 11/12/2022 08:47

It's perfectly acceptable and legal to burn dry wood. It's also cheaper than gas heating now.

PortiasBiscuit · 11/12/2022 08:47

What you are actually smelling, is us countryfolk burning townies like you in our wicker men.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 11/12/2022 08:49

It’s not something I’ve noticed tbh.

Willmafrockfit · 11/12/2022 08:50

i am not sure what is burning, i assumed it was coal fires
i like it.

Nitgel · 11/12/2022 08:50

Cannabis smoke yes

BertieBotts · 11/12/2022 08:51

I love it! And yes, I have noticed. It reminds me of the village where my granny lived. It's certainly not a new thing, been like this since I was a child.

It's because you have laws against burning solid fuels in towns so most people have electric, gas or oil heating instead. Villages are often older buildings and people still burn wood or coal.

helloisitmeyourelookingfor · 11/12/2022 08:51

My small town smells of weed

Ducksurprise · 11/12/2022 08:53

We don't have gas, we'd freeze without solid fuel heating.

Alexandra2001 · 11/12/2022 08:54

Most of it is open fires, not wood burners.

People can't afford to heat their homes and some can't even afford decent food... what do you expect them to do?

Will be even worse going forward, this war will go on for years & along with it.. very expensive energy & little or no subsidy for anyone but the very poor.

MrsMorton · 11/12/2022 08:55

How odd.

Whityedaine · 11/12/2022 08:55

After about 4pm the air is awful in our village and I am pretty sure they aren't just burning seasoned wood.

Unless you are all electric, driving for a living doesn't help towards clean air either.

I've no doubt, to support your outrage, you will be all electric for this thread. 😁

BertieBotts · 11/12/2022 08:55

However, I suspect you are exaggerating with the smell transferring to your own clothes and hair - this happens if you stand near an open fire but not from smelling wood/coal smoke from chimneys!

When you say you drive do you make deliveries and go into lots of houses?

Exhausteddog · 11/12/2022 08:56

Same as others I seem to smell weed or dope wherever I go (central London where I work, on the train, and the town where I live) ...it seems to be everywhere!

Willmafrockfit · 11/12/2022 08:57

LittleBearPad · 11/12/2022 08:57

Lovely smell! Especially when it’s cold and frosty

gogohmm · 11/12/2022 08:57

Beats the stench of cannabis I get in (affluent) parts of my town, aging hippies Grin

WhatTheFlap · 11/12/2022 08:59

Such a dramatic post 😂😂

This.

Is this the poster that is obsessed with wood burners and always shares dodgy articles as proof of how terrible they are?
