Preferably something in Soho. Maybe something Chinese. Help! Comfort is a big must.

Browns in Soho is quite nice (although it’s not Chinese). I’m sure there are lots of nice places in Chinatown that aren’t too pricey; I’ve found this link, which might have a few good options - chinatown.co.uk/en/discover/cosiest-restaurants-bars/

A few places I like around Soho which are good value for money and nice:

Pastaio - great food, value and nice atmosphere
Roti King
Ugly Dumpling
10 Greek Street

Last weekend I stumbled across Ruby Lucy hotel bar on Lower Marsh (near The Cut behind Waterloo Station). I know it's not in your area but it was nice - it was quiet and comfortable with good snacky options eg cheese/charcuterie platters. Not expensive at all and quite casual feeling. I'm not a Londoner so am always delighted when I find somewhere that has similar prices to outside London and is not too fancy!

Vasco and Piero on D'Arblay street if you want excellent Italian.

Brasserie Zedel - a Parisian Brasserie downa cute side alley right on top of Piccadilly Circus Station. Gorgeous deep red banquettes, proper Parisian atmos, prie Fixe menu £17.75 for two courses. What more could you want? :-)

Balans on Old Compton is lovely, extremely LGBT-friendly so you might be the only straight couple in there (if indeed you are straight!), the food is gorgeous and I find it extremely relaxed and friendly.

Camino in Kings Cross is also really nice and again, very friendly and comfortable.

Thanks so much for all these suggestions!

I second Brasserie Zedel . I love it there and it’s very French and very grown up but reasonably priced. There is a separate American Bar as well. I hope the date goes well.

Thirding Zedel! It’s the perfect combination of glitz and laidback. Also get three courses for the Prix Fixe, why not.

SpicyFoodRocks · 06/12/2022 18:31

I was going to suggest Brasserie Zedel! I thought that was my secret 😂 Love it. Went on Sunday. Delicious and cosy and not hideously expensive though not cheap.

Inamo is fun with the interactive table boards - could be a good ice breaker for a date. It’s Asian-fusion too.
