to worry about a barking cough in 13 year old?

He’s not well with a sore throat and runny nose etc but what’s concerning me most is this barking cough that started very suddenly
Sometimes he will only cough a few times, other times the cough will be like a fit.

No whooping sound but not a cough I’ve ever heard and we’ve all had Covid twice.

It sounds like a bark but from what I’ve read, croup doesn’t really happen in this age group.

We have both had the same thing here, my son started with a hacking cough and then a temperature, snotty nose, earache and sweats. Then I went down with it - lasted 72 hours and both on the mend now. Apparently it's doing the rounds. The cough seems to be lingering on.
Lemsip, honey shots to relieve the tickle throat and lots of rest is my best advice.
Hope he feels better soon OP.

Yep, my 11yo had that too. I was worrying as his last virus brought on an asthma attack that put him in hospital. Luckily this one sounded awful but only lasted a day or two. He's still got a bit of a cough but the really bad barking cough didn't last long. Hope it's the same for yours.

It doesn't happen as often but older children can get croup too and may need steroids.

My 14 year old had this, it sounded exactly like when she was a toddler and had croup. It's more unusual in older kids but not impossible

My 13 yr old has had exactly the same since Friday and is still feeling very sorry for himself. I've now come down with it too and feel rotten, so at least I know he's not just putting it on to avoid school tomorrow!

My DS6 had croup last year and the GP said more older kids were getting it since covid. If it gets worse see your GP as he might need steroids.

My 13 yo has a sore throat, high temperature, copious amount of snot, muscle pains and a nasty nasty cough. He’s asthmatic and the inhalers aren’t really cutting it. I was panicking about strep A, but he’s got no rash or strawberry tongue.
He’s just come off a course of steroids and antibiotics after having covid. Poor chap.

My ds14 has had this recently. Was ill but the cough is lingering. He had croup when he was a toddler. He's spent the last three days staying indoors, keeping warm and resting. It's definitely easing up now. I was worried about a chest infection but no mucus

Iluvfriends · 04/12/2022 18:09

Croup can occur in older chdren and teens. I had a family member get it when he was 15.

Badgirlriri · 04/12/2022 18:09

Before covid people got coughs all the time!
it’s nothing sinister

Reservoirbogs · 04/12/2022 18:16

My ds's covid cough was a barking cough. All three times!

Stressymother · 04/12/2022 18:56

I’m not worried about him having a cough, it’s just the weirdest sounding cough I’ve heard
LFTs arrive tomorrow

My DS is 11 and woken up with a barking cough. He has always had croup as a younger child and anytime he gets a respiratory virus, this barking is a clear sign. I took him to the drs a few weeks ago for another respitory virus with a croupy cough, they said older children don’t tend to get it but prescribed steroids anyway. I firmly believe older children can get croup if they have a history of it. Now the nervous wait to see if it turns into anything else. 😔
