This is fucking agony! Any advice?

my finger is fucking agony (I’ve attached a photo).

I’m a nail biter. I was stressed and sat and ripped it and bit too far down and now my nail is basically non existent, throbbing/ excruciating and hot and swollen. I don’t think it’s infected yet as it’s only recently bitten and I’ve kept it clean and covered. I think it’s just sore because of how short ive bitten it. It hurts to even bend and move my finger and anything touching the tip of my finger is agony.

does anyone have any advice for anything I can do to relieve the pain a little bit? I’ve had sore fingers from nail biting before but never this bad. It’s horrible. I’ve tried ice, painkillers, hot compresses, nothing is really helping it. I can’t even use the finger it hurts so much😔
If anyone has any advice I’d be really grateful.

I’ve been working really hard to stop the habit- I’ve tried the horrible tasting nail polish, stress balls, things I can play with (fidget spinners etc). Nothing has helped. I can’t wear acrylics or gel due to work. I’ve been a nail biter since I was a baby and I fucking hate it but it just seems to destress and relax me. I’ve recently been trying a technique stopping biting one nail at a time which is working so far, although it means I end up biting the other nails too far down like what’s happened now!

That does look very uncomfortable. Have you got any Savlon? I've used it when I've had small cuts on my fingers. Try a little bit to begin with. Hopefully, that'll do the trick.

No idea how to stop your nail biting - sorry!

dolor · 02/12/2022 01:08

You'll need to lance that.

pnutter · 02/12/2022 01:16

Put a plaster on it I've had the same recently it somehow helps

Teaseall · 02/12/2022 01:21

I totally understand. I'm a long term (recovering) nail biter too.
Are you not allowed to wear any acrylic or gel nails at all it is it just long ones?

Trez1510 · 02/12/2022 01:23

I don't have any advice on how to reduce the pain, but I do know how sore it is.
I pulled a little edge of a nail and it got infected.

As the pus gathered, and the pain throbbed, I was desperate to relieve the pain.
I used Sudocreme to draw out the pus. It worked, but not instantly.

I cleaned the area with antibac wipe, applied Sudocreme and a plaster. It was much better the following day but took a few days for the pus to drain completely and the pain to vanish.

Re the nail biting, the only suggestion I can offer is something a work colleague said to her son when he was biting his nails. She told him to imagine he had run his nails along the underside of a toilet bowl rim and then think about biting his nails. It worked for him. It might for you too?

Sunshineandrainbow · 02/12/2022 01:30

Have you got any magnesium sulphate paste? Coat it and cover with plaster. If not sudocream or bathe in salt water.
I have had this and it kills

nalabae · 02/12/2022 01:45

Get acrylics.
this will stop your habit.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 02/12/2022 01:55

I'm a biter. Soak it in heavy salt water. Warm not hot.

This ^

It worked for me. And I didn’t have to wear them for years, either.
They look so much nicer than little nubs, too.

JennyWI · 02/12/2022 01:59

So odd advice- Go to the store and buy some Johnson and Johnson first aid tape, the name brand. rip some off and cover your finger. leave it overnight (and surround it with a band aid). Not sure why it works but it helps draw out the soreness.

Nugg · 02/12/2022 02:10

I would try soaking in warm water body, temperature water or a little bit more heat, then try pushing the cuticle back a little very very gently and see if this releases the pressure

luladebulachops · 02/12/2022 02:14

a little paronychia is developing. magnesium sulfate paste helps draw out the pus. germolene is good and has a little topical anaesthetic in it so helps dull the pain. take paracetamol, see your GP as you may need flucloxacillin.

whataballbag · 02/12/2022 02:28

It does look infected OP

meowzeer · 02/12/2022 02:55

Dressing to stop the air getting to it. Makes it sting less. Maybe a honey dressing.

Kylie83 · 02/12/2022 03:14

I used to do this and I ordered anxiety rings that fit on my fingers. I wonder if a distraction like that could work? I feel your pain (literally) it sucks.

lovelilies · 02/12/2022 03:31

Oral antibiotics will help this (I did it when I was a nail biter). I second the acrylics to break the habit (once healed obvs). Then reguLr gel polishes to keep on top of it. Mine were awful for over 30years, as bad as the OP now they're lovely, nail lady can't believe I was a biter

lovelilies · 02/12/2022 03:33

Sorry just read post properly 🙈 cooking gel or even just holding something cool will help soothe it a Little for now

DoraDee · 02/12/2022 05:00

Try soaking in salt water. Gently squeeze so pus comes out. You possibly need to see the GP for treatment

The OP already said they can’t get acrylics due to work. It’s in the opening post. What’s the point in commenting to help if you can’t even be bothered to read the OP properly?!
