To think it's pretty gross to put a folding bike in a supermarket trolley

I saw a man at the supermarket checkouts tonight who had put his folding bicycle in his trolley. It was folded so that it stood on its two tyres, which is a clever design and must be useful when transporting or storing it folded up.

But why put it in a shopping trolley where people put their food when you've likely been cycling through goodness-knows-what outside?

AIBU to think this is pretty gross and unnecessary?

With the millions of people that handle shopping trolleys YABU for being concerned about a bike.

monsteronahill · 30/11/2022 18:55

I wouldn't put one in there, but people put handbags / children with shoes on in trolleys all the time, both of which are equally gross!

As long as you wash unpackaged food before eating and packaged food is sealed, it's not really the end of the world to me.

Trolleys have so many people touching them, putting things in them that have been transported and touched by many people, been in crates on floors etc - by the time you pick anything up it'll definitely have germs on.

YABU, I’ve seen a huge rat crawling in the trollies at a supermarket near me, they’re filthy anyway.

cleanfreak12345 · 30/11/2022 18:56

Most people lock their bikes up outside, obviously he is too important to do this

Lulu1919 · 30/11/2022 18:57

I'd me more concerned about any clothes or stationary etc I'd buy and put in the dirty trolley ...I put clothes in one of my bags whilst shopping usually though.

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 30/11/2022 18:59

Kids are dirtier and they are often put in the main part of trollies so i'd say he's fine!

Why? Do you put unwrapped food directly into it? If not, where's your problem? Kids go in trollies, probably with dog poo on their shoes, handbags that have been resting on toilet floors etc. Find something more meaningful to get stressed about.

TellMeWhere · 30/11/2022 19:02

Shopping trolleys are not clean. At all.

Celticdawn5 · 30/11/2022 19:02

A bit surprising but most stuff in a supermarket is wrapped so it wouldn’t bother me at all….and as mentioned earlier , you get kids, shopping bags etc in trollies and unwashed hands on everything

ShinyMe · 30/11/2022 19:04

Personally, I don't think it's any more disgusting that children sitting in the main part of the trolley, but I know that's a very unpopular opinion so ignore me.

Haha, I'm not stressed, it was a passing thought.

Yeah, if I'm buying loose fruit or veg it's likely to go straight into the trolley.

I personally don't think kids should go in trolleys either, and I never put my bag down on toilet floors, but we all have different opinions.

Maybe the poor sod forgot his lock

Jesus if this is a big concern of yours then you’re doing ok.
unless you are licking the trolley who cares

I love it when people roll this response out... really, no-one has any idea what's going on in anyone's lives. It's like saying only completely carefree people can make small talk - which is basically what half of the posts on AIBU are.

I can talk about my mum dying, if you'd prefer? Or my single parent life with SEND children? Perhaps you'd like to hear how my abusive ex raped me?

Well, that escalated quickly.

SkylightSkylight · 30/11/2022 20:12

@Gasketcracker

Honestly, the stuff that happens to trolleys this is minor. All kinds of things are spilt in them, fixes sleep in them, rats run all over them peeing & pooping in them. People take them messing about in them, peeing on them. Two tyres, couldn't be less bothered!!

NoWeaponsOnTheTable · 30/11/2022 20:13

Was going to say I'd raise an eyebrow although overall it wouldnt bother me but that changed tone really quickly 😱

Gasketcracker · 30/11/2022 20:20

Well, it pisses me off that it's one of the standard responses on here. Obviously everyone has worries bigger than the fairly inane thing that they're* *posting about, it's such a lazy way of trying to shut someone down.

Fair enough on the trolleys generally being disgusting though... I still think it's gross, but it's clearly fairly standard next to everything else that happens in them/around them 🤢

Caspianberg · 30/11/2022 20:21

Well most trolleys are stored outside where they get pooed on by birds, rained on, pollution, pollen, rats…
Many are left the other side of a supermarket car park for months left in a hedge or something.

100s of People the push them around sneezing, coughing, with hands many don’t wash after toilet…

I don’t think children in them makes a jot of difference. They are already filthy.

Flooper · 30/11/2022 20:25

I'm sorry to hear about all the shit you're going through, OP. Sounds like a lot.

The bike in the trolley thing wouldn't bother me. My pet supermarket peeve is people half lying across their trolley as they push it. Or people who park their trolley mid aisle and wander off. Or people who stop in the doorway to chat to their pal Pauline.
