To want to keep the bottle of gin?

My first AIBU so please don't kick me too hard.

I bought dh a bottle of his favourite tipple from a wine merchant. Yesterday I got a call asking if I'd received it. I hadn't yet but I got it that afternoon and tucked it away unopened for Christmas.

Today they called again and I had. They asked if it was was I was expecting. I opened it for them and it was not my order, it was a bottle of gin. I got the idea from them that there had been a muddle with a few orders.

They are arranging to pick up the wrong order next week by courier and sending the correct order. But they can't give me a time slot - I'm expected to wait in for the whole day. Being an over complying numpty I've chosen the least bad day for me next week. But I've got a really busy week ahead between work and life. I don't want to stay in all day for their error.

AIBU to drink the bottle of gin over the weekend and hand the empty bottle over to the courier?

Obviously I won't do this, but it would be nice if they were to do some sort of gesture of goodwill.

The courier isn't going to be doing an exchange either, so I'll have to be in twice.

I wouldn't be waiting in...pity you were a bit to honest Gin Grin

That’s ridiculous customer service
they should make sure that the exchange is done with minimal fuss and you don’t need to wait in twice - it’s their mistake

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/11/2022 17:51

I agree Ruby. They need to be using a courier service that can give a timed slot. I should have asked them to do that, rather than agreeing, but that wasn't mentioned until part way through and I was already in helpful mode, rather than critical thinking mode.

I'm always too honest. Sad

I’d tell them it’s being left on the doorstep

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/11/2022 17:55

oh doh MrsByers. Of course, I can email them and let them know that I'll need to do that. That's the reasonable thing to do. Though I still want to know when dh will get his drink as they've not told me that.

So I don't get to drink the gin and hand back the bottle? Pity.

"I'm going to be out for part of the day but I can leave it on the doorstep. My doorstep isn't sheltered and is visible from the street, so I cannot guarantee that it won't be rained on or stolen. If you wish to arrange a timed courier service instead, I anticipate being in until 11am that day".

Unless it’s a really small company for who it might be a big financial hit, and even possibly then (I mean what business wouldn’t be able to absorb the cost of a bottle of gin?), they shouldn’t really be asking you to do anything other than keep the gin and send you your correct order with their apologies. Terrible customer service.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/11/2022 18:59

That's the message I'll send Elephant, thanks! Once I know when dhs present is going to arrive. By the end of this I'll have waited in 3 times for a one time delivery at this rate.

I do wonder how many bottles are all in the wrong place. Some of the bottles they sell are mega expensive! Wish they'd sent me one of those instead Wink

Sadly most people appear to think (quite rightly I admit) that I have to give it back. Can more people vote for me to drink it please.

dawnfromgavinandstacey · 30/11/2022 19:03

Drink it all then email them Grin

I definitely vote for you to drink it!!

tell them weather guru's don't return gin!!!

seriously though, it should be their gift to you for messing up your order!! Not further hassle to you waiting in TWICE to fix THEIR mistake.

Email them & get them told!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/11/2022 20:12

I like your thinking! What if it were for dhs birthday.

I do feel sorry for them, it did sound like a massive headache.
Half of respondees think I should drink it. Grin

Why did you agree to this? Maybe now would be the time to contact them and ask them to provide a better service given the muffle was theirs. If you don't ask ...

Loics · 30/11/2022 20:30

YABU for wanting to drink the vile liquid that is gin. 🤢 I'd be wanting the courier to get it out my house sooner than next week!
In all honesty though, YWBU to drink it, but they shouldn't expect you to wait in all day to give it to a courier, they should be arranging collection from a safe place or giving a more precise time slot as it was their error.

I've no idea why I agreed to it! You are quite right of course!

Can they resell it? What would happen if they got it back and it was filled with water or something?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/12/2022 06:58

Shock I couldn't do that!
