To think if the mince smells and looks ok, it's fine?

I've got a pack of mince use by date is yesterday, I had a look online about what people do and official guidance is to only use it to midnight on the dot the day it goes off then to bin it?! It sounds bonkers to me though as I've always gone by look and smell, of course taste with use by dates.

AIBU to think this could be cooked and feed 3 of us tonight?

If it smells fine I would cook it.

ForfuckssakeEXHstopbeingatwat · 30/11/2022 16:23

It's absolutely fine with even it's gone a bit less bright red than usual and smells fine. Cook it a little longer than usual if worried but it wil be fine.

It’s absolutely fine. Official guidelines are for people who can’t use their own senses and relevant knowledge/understanding to make the necessary risk assessments.

Lcb123 · 30/11/2022 16:27

It’s fine I do it regularly. I saw a program and they showed how they work out use by, and basically they put the date as 1 week before the date when it would actually make you ill

Hyperion100 · 30/11/2022 16:27

I'd 100% use it.

If it was 3 days over, maybe not.

BaileySharp · 30/11/2022 16:27

Smells and looks OK- it's fine (as long as you don't have covid or something affecting your sense of smell!)

Woahtherehoney · 30/11/2022 16:34

I’d 1000% use it as long as it hasn’t gone grey and smells ok

I’ve had meat that’s in date go off so I think most of the time it’s a bit of a scam and just use your common sense.

teezletangler · 30/11/2022 17:19

Even if it's gone a bit grey I usually dig into it and if it's nice and pink and smells fine on the inside then I'll use it. I haven't given anyone food poisoning yet.

Yetanothernamechangeagain · 30/11/2022 17:21

Mince will tell you if it’s not okay. I’d definitely use it.

I got a kilo to cook for dinner and then freeze extra meals for me, DH and our 5 year old so thought I'd check. Usually just me and DH would eat it, or if really in doubt then chuck it.

That advice of up to midnight must be causing so much food wastage!

I’d totally eat that if it looks and smells fine.

The idea that at 12am all the produce in the fridge goes “right fella’s, whoever is best before on the 1 Dec needs to get their fury stink on NOW” amuses me 😉

FTHC · 30/11/2022 18:54

I'd eat it 🙂
