Not really an AIBU just need to tell someone how stupid I've been

I'm so cross with myself. First thing this morning, while still too sleepy to really think about what I'm doing, I went through my inbox and deleted a lot of emails. I even went to the 'bin' and emptied it.

I've just realised I've accidentally deleted a gift voucher, purchased from DMIL for Christmas, to book a posh spa break. £500! We'd clubbed together with DH's brothers to pay for it. I wish I'd never agreed to organise! I've emailed the company in the hope they'll resend, but their T&Cs suggest they may not. I feel sick.

Anyway... please tell me about stupid things you've done to make me feel better!

I once drove to my local pool (20 min. drive away) only to realise I'd forgotten swimming costume, towel, etc. Drove home, picked up relevant required bits, drove back only to find pool was closed due to it being a Bank Holiday. Hated self for a few hours.

The voucher must have a one-off code, surely? Otherwise what's to stop someone emailing it to another person and using it twice? They must be able to re-send it!

Somethingsnappy · 30/11/2022 12:10

Didn't realise I'd quoted your whole post there, sorry!

RandomMusings7 · 30/11/2022 12:12

Call them and ask to give you the serial number of the voucher because you need it now and can't access your mailbox for whatever reason.

And hope it not one of those QR code thingies

It's happened to all of us, @Allthegoodusernamesareused. Don't be too harsh on yourself.

Don't know if this will help, or whether it is just for companies, but may be worth a try

You can usually restore deleted emails from the bin. What email is it? Outlook/live etc you definitely can.

JustABasicWitch · 30/11/2022 12:25

It may be of no use to you but i use Outlook/Hotmail and even if i empty my binned folder it still shows an option at the top to 'Recover items deleted from this folder' - i can use the search bar to find one i need and then recover it.

This is on a desktop rather than the mobile app, so not sure if it would be the same on there but may be worth checking?

I agree you can usually restore emails even if they've been removed from the trash. You certainly can at my work before the server reboots at midnight. Which email provider are you with?

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 30/11/2022 13:42

It's Gmail. Sadly once you empty the bin, you can't recover the deleted messages 😢

I can't see why they wouldn't resend it. They must have a record of individual gift vouchers to know if they have been claimed.

MrsDeWinter · 30/11/2022 13:57

I left £1,800 of vouchers that I'd been given through work in a hotel room after a boozy night and a bleary morning.
They were just a piece of paper with a code, which couldn't be reissued.
By the time I realised housekeeping had been and cleaned the room - we spent 3 hours in their steel dumpers out the back and found it.
It was so disgusting and DH and I were so so so hungover. But we enjoyed the holiday it paid for.

Hope you can get it reissued
