think people shouldn't smoke at school gates?

It smells awful and pretty rubbish for others to have to breathe it whilst waiting whilst waiting to pick up their kids.
Is it really that hard to just wait till you are elsewhere?

I know what an addition js and this is one I had for years - there is never a need to stand right on the gates and smoke where all the kids are coming and going is there?

phoenixrosehere · 29/11/2022 14:39

Do they know what secondhand and thirdhand smoke is? Why does their addiction trump the health of those who choose not to waiting around them?

This is actually my main concern! It's incredibly selfish to just put your own wants above the health of others, especially in a setting where there are obviously children!
Aside from the fact that the smell is disgusting, you are putting other children's health at risk!

People shouldn’t smoke anywhere where you have no choice to be in close proximity to them

One of the dads at my girls old school used to rock up with a joint on in the morning and a beer in the afternoon, right up to the gate where the headteacher stood, no fucks given. The mum was pally with the head and on the pta so guess it was fine 🤷‍♀️

Only reason I joined The PTA is so I could get away with this sort of thing

Mumoblue · 29/11/2022 15:21

It was very common where I grew up for parents (mine included) to be smoking at pickup and dropoff. I don’t see it so much where I live now.

I have some sympathy for smokers, because I know it’s an addiction - but I think it’s not unreasonable to expect them to not do it in an environment with loads of children around.

Do you know what an addiction is?

Most smokers I know tend to stand to one side rather than be in the thick of a group of people. Can you stand to one side yourself until the gates open?

Some people are addicted to cocaine or alcohol but you don’t see anyone enjoying a crafty line off someone’s bonnet or swigging from a can of Special Brew at drop off do you.

HauntedPencil · 29/11/2022 15:31

Certainly be a bit more fun that!

Same but you've only got to have one on the way - on a side street - in a quiet spot before you get there

Bunnyfuller · 29/11/2022 19:44

Yes it’s an addiction. But waiting 10 minutes isn’t sending you into opioid cold turkey. Whilst the ‘god I need a fag’ is strong, it IS resistible. And it would go if they stopped caving into that urge at that time.

stopped my 20 plus a day habit in 2012. 1 heart attack in at age 51. Stop it, it will kill you.

Norriscolesbag · 29/11/2022 19:52

Selfish, bad mannered and rough. Yet another example of why I can’t comprehend and sometimes can’t stand fellow humans.

PinkPlantCase · 29/11/2022 19:52

Whoever said they aren’t breaking the law, well I think it should be illegal to smoke on school grounds or near the entrance.

It’s so damaging.

My DC aren’t school age yet but I have a breathing condition which gets much worse when I’m around second hand smoke. Right now it’s fine, apart from passing someone in the high street maybe I don’t encounter any. I didn’t realise that idiots were smoking at school pick up.

PeterRabbitHadACarrot · 29/11/2022 19:58

I absolutely hate people who do this.
Why do they have the right to negativity impact my health with secondhand smoke just because they want to do it?! It should be illegal to smoke anywhere in public.
I'd probably get my husband to call me and ask him to remind me to email the school because the chimney wants sweeping. Would hopefully embarrass them- so much cheek to do it right by school gates. Other parents can't escape them and not good for the children either. No sense of shame at all.

I can tell from the smell of the childrens clothes whose parents smoke.

okay?

Henuinequest · 29/11/2022 20:16

YANBU. No one should
bw smoking around kids.

CornishGem1975 · 29/11/2022 20:19

My kids are late teens and I never ever saw anyone smoking anywhere near the vicinity of the school, it just wasn't the done thing, you would have stuck out like a sore thumb. And I'm pretty sure there were some smokers around but they were obviously able to manage 30 minutes without one, addiction or not. How on earth do people get anything done otherwise.

LindorDoubleChoc · 29/11/2022 20:20

Yanbu. I really wish parents wouldn't do this.

At the primary school on my road there's a group of staff - teachers and TAs - who huddle outside the school gates to smoke every break time. It's just a bit grim.

How do people manage to hold down jobs if the addition is THAT bad. I mean, you can't nip off at work after 10 mins for a fag.

3WildOnes · 29/11/2022 20:21

That sounds rough. Luckily I have never seen a parent smoking or vaping anywhere near the school gates where I live.

I know a couple of the parents have the odd cigarette once their children are tucked up in bed but never around their children.

An addiction means that some people can wait longer than others, by hours, others cant. OP was asking why they can't wait. Who's to say they haven't already waited hours and this is the first time they are able to smoke?

It might be vile, unhygienic, unhealthy etc but sometimes its not a choice , or habit. Its a physical and psychological craving that has to be met.

Would you be that relaxed if it was a drug addict shooting up or necking vodka at the gates?

I was going to ask them to move as my asthmatic toddler was beside them, but then noticed they had a newborn in a pram so decided they wouldn't give a toss.Struggled to hide my disgust however.

School are fond of emailing about behaviour at gates during dropoff/pickup, so may ask them to address this. The layout means it's hard to just 'stand elsewhere ' because a road runs directly alongside and to be frank, I shouldn't have to go further back in the queue because of someone else's disgusting habit.

Even with Addiction you can wait 5 minutes, or have a smoke on the way to school instead of expecting people who don't have this filthy habit to move or inhale second hand smoke.

HauntedPencil · 29/11/2022 21:17

School would send a generic message asking parents not to smoke at the gates if have thought if you ask
