To not go to this meal?

We aren't in the UK.

my friend and her wife are having a big Thanksgiving gathering this weekend. They are close friends of ours as we are all expats. They have an adult daughter who constantly insults me. For example, a few months ago she claimed/"joked" (as she is doing her masters in the same field as me and working for a company I used to work for) that her reports are "far superior" to mine. To be fair, she was drunk, but still.
Then (also a few months ago) on a speaker call with her mom, she thought I said I was "smarter" than her (not what I said) and immediately said that I was "not smart". Her mom told her "not to be rude".
Just now, on a group chat re: plans this weekend she joined and I had said something about celebrating something that was in the news (that directly affects my career) and she said "old lady with old news".
I don't want to go this weekend. AIBU?

You don’t have to go to anything you don’t want to, so don’t go

But, I’d be looking at whether this is worth cutting a friendship down for and would be speaking to the parent abd / or pulling her up on it. Fwiw I don’t think she’s actively insulting you but sounds more aggy / immature

You need to respond to this twat at the time, so you’re not stewing over it later. Here are some not great examples!

she claimed/"joked" … that her reports are "far superior" to mine.

“Sorry, love they’re not, come back in 20 years time when you’ve gpt my experience.”

said that I was "not smart"

”Can you repeat that? What makes you think you are smarter than me?”

said "old lady with old news".

”Young juvenile with juvenile views”

I found when someone makes a underhand shitty comment say loudly "can you repeat that?" And stare at them. Then just walk away with out even answering. If you choose not to go I'd be tempted to say why.

thehorsehasnowbolted · 26/11/2022 06:35

I would ignore her OP.

If you confront your friend's wife she will most likely taker her daughter's side

I would go to the meal and avoid engaging with the immature br**t

notnowB · 26/11/2022 07:38

Who the fuck raises someone like that?!
Sounds like she can't bear to be in the same vicinity as someone in the same field as her, because she's insecure. Insulting you makes her feel better.
She still sounds like a nightmare though!

Hahah I love these! I suck at coming up with them in time though!

Yea I'm going to do this. I'll go and ignore and deflect (and have an exit plan if things get intense!). Luckily friends daughter doesn't live here, she's just flown in for thanksgiving.

Sounds dull. I'd not spend time with them

Hoppinggreen · 26/11/2022 15:17

Personally I would crush her like a bug but if you don’t want to go you don’t have to

Keyansier · 26/11/2022 16:00

YANBU to not go for any reason, or no reason at all other than you don't want to, but YABU if its just simply because of the examples you wrote out. Hardly devastating stuff, surely you'd just respond back.

Valeriekat · 26/11/2022 20:19

She sounds like an absolute bitch.
Did you go and get insulted? Tell us how it went.

Thepossibility · 26/11/2022 20:30

I would have to write something like
“excuse me?" After that rude old lady comment. And say similar when she is rude. She probably thinks she's having some clever banter, so I'd need to shut that down so it's obviously just one sided rude comments.

JudgeJ · 26/11/2022 20:34

And were you as drunk as you are now when you wrote them deary?
