To take DS2 out of school for DS1’s birthday?

DS1 is 18 next year, he's had a lot of struggles but with this past year being the worst with his mental health etc. Since he was about 15/16 he was saying he wouldn't make it to 18 but he's on the right medication now and he's getting better.

For years, he's been saying he wants to go to Disneyland. He hasn't asked for much for his birthday so we're thinking of taking him to Disneyland, his birthday is in school time and we want to take DS2(9) as we think it'll be unfair if we take DS1 and not him or even if it's just me and DS1. For the dates we've chosen he'd miss 4 days of school (Friday to travel, Monday and Tuesday then Wednesday to travel home) he'd hopefully be back in school Thursday depending on tiredness.

Will we BU?

For a 9 year old, I would.

Clymene · 17/11/2022 16:26

And so glad your eldest's MH is improving. Must have been a really worrying time.

Will be great for the whole family to celebrate how far he's come.

Sheldoncoopersspot · 17/11/2022 16:29

I'm a stickler for school attendance but i absolutely would in your circumstances and enjoy every minute of it.

Chuckiegg · 17/11/2022 16:31

I would.

Woahtherehoney · 17/11/2022 16:32

I absolutely would! At 9 he won’t miss anything crazy important to his education and building memories with his brother will be worth its weight in gold as I’m guessing he might not have been able to build many memories due to his MH.

So glad your eldest is improving ❤️

bouquetofnofucks · 17/11/2022 16:34

Tiredforfive45 · 17/11/2022 16:34

Teacher here.

Yes. 100% do it!

MRSDoos · 17/11/2022 16:34

Yes I don’t see a problem at 9 years old

RedWingBoots · 17/11/2022 16:35

Take the 9 year old out and pay the fine without moaning.

brighterthanthemoon · 17/11/2022 16:42

So the 18 year old wouldn't miss any education? If that's the case then go for it.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/11/2022 17:00

Yep do it! Your son deserves recognition of just how far he's come.

Completely agree with this. Go and have an amazing time xx

theonlygirl · 17/11/2022 17:30

Absolutely do it. No hesitation. And I say that as someone who doesn't take kids out of school for holidays.

daisy46 · 17/11/2022 17:56

Do it. That's a great thing to celebrate as a family.

BertieQueen · 17/11/2022 19:50

Definitely do it!

Your son deserves it as does your family.

enjoy❤

balalake · 17/11/2022 19:57

I would go with both of them, but not at a time which means being off school. No harm in celebrating a birthday a second time a few weeks later.

18th birthday in my opinion is the only real 'big' birthday.
