To want a sofa that's cheap AND very comfortable?

MarianneVos · 15/11/2022 07:48

I want a sofa for the playroom and don't want to /can't spend very much.

I don't want second hand because I have pet allergies and you can never be sure people are being honest about that, plus I'd have to hire a van and a strong person to collect.

I'll be spending a lot of time sitting on it and reading to DCs etc, feeding a baby so I would like it to be very comfortable. Where should I look?

Or do I want the moon on a stick? Do you always get what you pay for with a sofa?

Ikea

Nsky62 · 15/11/2022 07:50

Argos are good, I got leather sofa bed, some years ago, about £600 no idea what price now

Merrow · 15/11/2022 07:50

IKEA, or if you can find one of the rx display / cancelled order places near you they tend to have much better prices.

AriettyHomily · 15/11/2022 07:56

IKEA - do they still do the Ektorp?

Christmasamtryigtogetexcited · 15/11/2022 07:59

Don’t bother with DFS …am still waiting for sofa delivery that was supposed to have been delivered in October!!

MarianneVos · 15/11/2022 08:03

Are all the IKEA ones good?

I guess you can't try any Argos before buying?

Ikea are ok, but you will get what you pay for, generally. If its cheap and comfortable on day one, it likely won't last long.

Farawayfromhere · 15/11/2022 08:15

We actually have an Ikea one that has been heavily used for 10+ years. So I’m not sure you get what you pay for. It’s lasted really well.

Nsky62 · 15/11/2022 08:19

My only niggle is I have to re jiggle base ( Velcro) as sofa bed back in, wouldn’t happen with sofa.
i took a gamble paid off

Hooverphobe · 15/11/2022 08:20

I’ve got an ikea ektorp I bought when I was pregnant with my first. He towers over me these days…

badgermushrooms · 15/11/2022 08:34

We've got an 8 year old flat pack ikea sofa where you can't take the cushions off to fluff them up. It isn't looking great these days but DH has worn an arse shaped groove on his preferred side and swears it's the most comfortable place he's ever sat. It also absorbed and hid a lot of wine and coffee stains back when it was our only one.

OldWivesTale · 15/11/2022 08:40

Ikea Ektorp. They last for years. Easy to wash the covers and you can buy new ones. I think they're comfortable to sit and sleep on.

Footle · 15/11/2022 08:42

Ektorp.

fussychica · 15/11/2022 09:07

Ektorp. The perfect sofa especially for a playroom, conservatory etc, loose covers, extra covers available, very comfortable and sturdy. We have one in our conservatory it's years old and still looks new.

Pollymollydolly · 15/11/2022 10:47

We went for ikea last time - I prefer loose covers for ease of cleaning with dogs and kids in the house. I bought replacement covers from Bemz. Very happy with them, probably won’t last as long as our previous £££££ sofas but I find them just as comfortable. Can’t remember the name of ours, they no longer sell it, so can’t recommend our exact one but would definitely recommend ikea for sofas

GooglyEyeballs · 15/11/2022 10:58

You can go to DFS, scs or any furniture store and they'll usually have a load of sofas in the sale section that are new (so no pet hairs) and only cost a few hundred quid. You might not find your ide style but you'll probably find something nice and you won't have to wait 8 weeks for it

wonkylegs · 15/11/2022 11:06

IKEA EKtorp
Bought one for our play/family room 9years ago and it's still going strong. Washable covers that are fine to bung in the washing machine. Comfortable and hardwearing.
We have 2 boys and in 9 years has had countless children jump, lie in it weirdly, make forts out the cushions, sleep on it and occasionally sit like normal people. We also have the big telly in that room so it gets adults for the the football and the whole family for films.
The back cushions need a bash occasionally to bring back to shape but otherwise very easy to look after.
Best value sofa we've ever bought.

onmywayamarillo · 15/11/2022 11:24

I've had the ektorp and stocksund

I prefer the stocksund as it has lower arms and is more comfortable.
Removable washable covers and you can buy spares.
But they are about to discontinue it!

MarianneVos · 15/11/2022 19:45

Thanks, it sounds like Ektorp is the one then! Was actually hoping for even cheaper than that but that probably is the moon on a stick!

Have you tried any outlets? Some good ones in Essex, we got ours at one.

sweetkitty · 15/11/2022 19:49

I immediately thought IKEA Ektorp too

we bought ours years ago for the playroom and recently bought new covers for it, it’s like a whole new sofa looks grear

stuntbubbles · 15/11/2022 20:02

Ikea Stocksund is prettier and more comfortable than the Ektorp imo.

MarianneVos · 19/11/2022 20:16

Well, I went and sat on every single sofa in IKEA today. I'm not a big fan of how the Ektorp looks but it is so comfortable! More comfy than my existing Duresta one that I spent nearly £2k on.
