Is it too early to ask my neighbour

To turn down their tv? Is there a cut off point where it's too late to be acceptable? Or a sliding scale of time and volume? Or is it never ok to be loud enough for neighbours?

I'm below them in flats and it is the tip of the iceberg really. I think they've taken up all carpets and rugs over the last few months 🤦🏼‍♀️

I think it really depends on how loud it is - there's a massive continum between being able to hear it in the background occasionally, to someone watching war films with a giant subwoofer

Loud enough that I could tell you it's some sort of suspenseful drama in a foreign language, with musical interludes. But not loud enough for me to tell you what the characters are saying. Though that might also be complicated by the language 😂

I think I would probably tolerate that, or drown it out with white/brown/[pink noise as appropriate. Foreign languages often sound louder because they're unfamiliar, and because some languages do just have more of the sounds that carry.

Usually the rules are they have to be quieter between 11pm and 7am. Sorry OP. You can still ask them though if you think they'll listen.

If you can hear someone's TV from above you it shouldn't matter what the time is. It's ridiculous, but they may be unaware. Tell them!

I recently told my neighbours when I could hear what the adverts were, plus I could hear their TV while I was watching my own, they didn't realise how much we could hear and havent heard their TV since.

MadelineUsher · 14/11/2022 22:53

If they are nice people, it's never too early to tell, and leaving it later would only embarrass them.

PeloFondo · 14/11/2022 22:57

It might be worth asking. My dad has a sound bar and had moved it and the neighbours mentioned noise. He was horrified and realised it was since he moved it, put it back where it was and no issues since

I occasionally hear my neighbours TV but it's very quiet murmuring (and they didn't yell at me when I set the burglar alarm off 3 times at 5am so...) BlushGrin

Not too early. I moved house because the walls were so thin in my last house I could hear the man of the house pee!!!
