Why are some bus drivers unkempt looking?

I don't use buses often thank goodness but I can't help but notice a lot of bus drivers are quite scruffy. Surely working in a service industry like public transport it is imperative to present a well-groomed image?? The Polish drivers always look clean and tidy it's just our staff.

Sack all the ugly, scruffy ones!

Only gorgeous, immaculately-groomed people should be allowed to work with the public.

Given the weedy salaries they are paid, the 100% polyester uniforms they have to wear round here, and the sheer quantities of abuse they get from sectors of the public, I am amazed ours don't show up for work starkers with a knife in each hand and covered in woad
Have a friend whose dad is a bus driver and he is generally too concerned to avoid being gobbed on/puked over/bottled to adjust his crackly sweatshirt for the benefit of passengers.

In Ireland when they had bus conductors (back in the dark ages) that had uniform trousers made from gaberdine material that used to go beautifully shiny after years of wear untroubled by washing

What a horrible example they are setting to the public, tissy!

Surely they have time to work out during breaks and bring salads and fruit in.

Those Poles! A lot of them smoke, you know. It may keep them thin, but it sets a bad example to bus riders!

I have noticed that it is not just bus drivers. Train conductors too.

but you dont get fat train conducters,though.they wouldnt be able to fit down the aisles.

Seriously, can't they press their uniforms before their shifts start, and at least run a comb through their hair? Although I do rather love Marina's idea of naked, woad-painted bus drivers with knives between their teeth. That might be the only way to subdue the naughty boys and girls from the local school.

suppose you are now going to tell us how your BIL is a bus driver and how he always looks immaculate, wears clean Y-Fronts every day and takes a cheese sandwich (on brown) to work with him.

Cali, sadly there are no bus drivers in my family. We are all either chief executives of big NHS hospitals or image consultants.

No drivers or conductors in the Quattro family thankfully.

We do have a cousin who is an accountant but we don't talk.

Incidentally, have you noticed the same applies to taxidrivers?

Gosh the ticket collectors at London Bridge are so scruffy. One of them was chewing gum today. I don't want to see someone masticating in public.
