She also encouraged record numbers of young women to have smear tests and thus saved thousands of young women from a similar early death.

Someone posted a few days ago saying that they were sick about people complaining that they have cancer

WeepingSomnambulist · 08/11/2022 10:13

So? Are we meant to have a jade goody day or something?

She was still a shallow, vapid, poorly educated, attention seeker who gave someone a hand job whilst on big brother for the nation to watch. Not exactly a role model.

She just happened to get cancer and used her position as a celeb to talk about which resulted in money raised and women getting smear tests. But still... we dont really need a public service announcement reminding us.

Thats great but don’t understand why the AIBU thread.

chipsandpeas · 08/11/2022 10:23

are we going to run through every dead celebrity who raised money for charity

what about the unknowns who do the same

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 08/11/2022 10:26

Jimmy Saville did far more for charity. Are we supposed to forgive him of his crimes?

She was on television spouting racist hate. She was a deeply unpleasant person.

Save your admiration for the nurses/scientists doing the smear tests.

God I hope not. Jimmy Saville raised over £40mil. for charities.

OP is just making a weird point to follow up www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4672546-aibu-to-remind-everyone-that-deborah-james-raised-ps7million?reply=121365015 this post on someone elses thread.

KitchiHuritAngeni · 08/11/2022 10:31

Let's not pretend she was utterly selfless here. She monetised her journey to make money for her boys, the rest of it was accidental.

She was only in the public eye so much at that point because she was trying to save her career after her disgusting racism, and it only gained so much traction because she was basically told on TV, where she was, because she was racist.

RambamThankyouMam · 08/11/2022 10:34

Maybe someone can also raise awareness of women being called "cervix havers" in publicity for smear tests, leading to confusion in less education women and those with English as an additional language. That would surely raise the uptake of smear tests.

Georgeskitchen · 08/11/2022 10:38

Well that went well didn't it OP 😉
