Businesses should be fined for wasting energy

I know there have been reports of energy blackouts in the upcoming winter where for 3 hours or 12 hours electricity will be turned off and energy prices have sky rocketed over the last months but am I right in thinking that some people need to to take responsibility for their energy usage and it should not just fall on general home occupiers who are paying or trying to pay their energy bills.

I drove up the high street in my local town one night and it was lit up to the nines. The shop fronts all had lights on inside, display cabinets switched on and the signage outside was still on and all I could think was surely businesses should be fined hefty fines for using it after these hours.

I think the price for using electricity after a certain time should be higher.. This could be the same for houses but the charge during the day should be a lot lower.

i think the higher price for using energy after your business is closed should not just be higher but it should be double the amount of the day rate for business contracts as I don’t think we should be allowed to just keep wasting energy.

What about residential house as when you drive past? Christmas lights will be on in every home ( and outside) very soon ..

So do you want to fine or charge more? Your post is confusing.

my post meant either a fine (which during writing my post I realised probably wouldn’t work) or better yet businesses are told this is your pence per kWh charge and it doubles to this amount after 6PM..

some businesses might not be happy if they’ve got appliances which cannot be turned off but it will encourage people to not just leave lights on.

i mean there is a furniture shop near my house which leaves all their display lamps on all night 😤

Well if you want to price business off the High Street that’s a faaaaabulous idea. Not like they’re already paying ridiculous rent and rates or anything.

Why not insist we can all only run one light bulb after 6pm?

Most of those lit up businesses will probably have their lights on timers you know, and if the area has heavy footfall because of night life it pays for people to see their wares and may prompt them to visit during trading hours.

Honestly, I don’t think any business will be using any more power than they need to in the current climate.

YANBU, office blocks lit up like a Christmas trees with all the lights on all night, no idea why, has been the way as long as I can remember.
