To want to move to Spain

Ohreallyisit · 03/11/2022 17:42

Ok so I think I’ve had enough of the UK and want to move to Spain at least for a year or so. I can work remotely so can get a digital nomad visa and take dH and DC. DH is less keen but I’ve lived in Europe before and loved it and want to do it again. AIBU? My DC has just started Reception. We would move next summer and she could go to an International school. My DH doesn’t like his job so he could leave (which he wants to anyway) - I earn enough to support us all in a rental for a year.

We did that! Working well so far. Been here 3 years.

RudsyFarmer · 03/11/2022 17:45

I’m not sure why you’d think it was unreasonable unless you just wanted to start another thread slagging off the U.K. if you want to go, go.

Taradiddled · 03/11/2022 17:46

Why would it be unreasonable? DS has lived in three countries in his ten years, though we’ll probably stay where we are now until he finishes school.

Ohreallyisit · 03/11/2022 17:46

@RudsyFarmer the AIBu was about is it fair to uproot my DC and my DH who is less keen.

OP posts:
WallaceinAnderland · 03/11/2022 17:47

Has anyone suggested you would be unreasonable?

Ohreallyisit · 03/11/2022 17:47

@Taradiddled can I ask where you moved to and how you’re finding it? Are your DC (s) at international school?

Whoops that last message was for @W0tnow

There's no digital nomad visa (as yet!), so you need to check out the limited options available to you. If you have half a million euros to spend on property then you'll be okay, anything less and it's really difficult now thanks to Brexit.

RudsyFarmer · 03/11/2022 17:52

I would imagine if you were going to uproot a child Reception would be a fine time to do it. Year 7 would be a bad time for example.

Sniffypete · 03/11/2022 17:53

Have you considered Portugal? It's easier to move there.

OldReliable · 03/11/2022 17:53

Do you speak fluent Spanish?

user1471457751 · 03/11/2022 17:54

Have you actually looked at the visa and working requirements? I don't think it's as easy as you may think.

greenshirt06 · 03/11/2022 17:54

I'm 99% sure we will relocate to France in 2024/2025 once we have a baby who is nearing school age. I'd much prefer to bring them up in France than the UK

Ohreallyisit · 03/11/2022 17:55

No don’t speak Spanish (yet). The digital nomad visa seems to be going through parliament at the moment so I’m thinking either next year or year after if necessary.

no not thought about Portugal- will have a look. Thanks.

Do you have an EU passport? It's very difficult otherwise unless you have a lot of money.

Snap, it was ok to move there to work digitally up to December 2021 but I don’t think it was so easy afterwards.

Ohreallyisit · 03/11/2022 17:56

@greenshirt06 that’s interesting. Do you have any links to France? This is not a Uk bashing thread at all. I live in Italy pre Brexit and just enjoy experiencing other cultures.

Check what it is like in January or February before moving anywhere. Glad to see a willingness to learn Spanish.

You can't. There's no such thing as a digital nomad visa in Spain yet; and while there is an NLV, you can't work remotely on it - they cracked down on this during Covid.

But yes, to some extent, you're being unreasonable. You need to compromise. I've lived in Spain before too; and would LOVE to go back, but my eagerness to go back doesn't override uprooting DH if he's not sure... and it definitely wouldn't if we had settled children who weren't keen.

But I'd look into the visa requirements some more first. They are complex. I know someone who had been to Spain to work remotely on 2 previous occasions and applied again in 2020... it was approved; off she went, and they were deported four months later. It wasn't as dramatic as "deported" sounds, but they're not allowed back for a few years. It's important to get the rules right!

fruitbrewhaha · 03/11/2022 17:59

I was about to suggest Portugal too. The D7 visa is relatively simple and requires an income of about 7k euros a year per adult and a couple of k for a child.

And I would do it in a heartbeat if I could. An amazing experience ad you could put you child into state school, they will teach him Portuguese.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 03/11/2022 18:00

@Ohreallyisit "Planning to launch". Has there been an update on it being "fully functional by 2026"?

Portugal does have a fully functional digital nomad visa, as does France, I believe - although I'm less familiar with the latter.

Yes- did a French degree and am fluent. Also lived in France for a year & the way of life just suits me (long lunches/ more family time/ less of an emphasis on work). I'm similar to you in that my job is remote so really interested to see how you get on relocating to Spain! Lots of people at my company (100% remote) live there and love it. Agree with you- I'm not UK-bashing as there are lots of things I love and will miss (French bureaucracy is 😤😬😳 for example!). Would also love my future child to be bilingual or at least exposed to other cultures from a v young age so I think it's awesome you're considering it too! Gives me hope for my future so I'll be watching with interest 😊

France and Ireland, loved both. No, local schools in both places. He picked up French very quickly.

Sniffypete · 03/11/2022 18:16

Spain have been talking about the digital nomad visa for the past couple of years, I don't see it happening anytime soon!!!
Still, you'll have plenty of time to learn Spanish!
