I guess I’m the pathetic friend that’s the benchmark of “at least my life is better than”

Ive recently tried to better myself - fresh look, be more outgoing to be met with comments from a friend that aren’t great.

Ultimately on paper friend has a better life than me and I’m not competition but I feel she might be jealous of me purely based on me bettering myself. Aibu or are people like this?

It's difficult to say without knowing what she said. What did she say?

SpookabooAtTheZoo · 30/10/2022 15:38

Yeah it depends on the situation and the comments.

You started selling illicit substances to make money and she's reacted by pointing out that's bad and illegal? She's not being unreasonable and YABU.

You went back to school to try and get a qualification in something with no jobs and she's reacted by pointing out this is a poor use of your funding allocation? She's not being unreasonable but YANBU either.

You are training to be a doctor and she's told you you're too stupid or that you won't be able to handle the shifts or similar? YANBU and she is BU.
Context is everything.

Jealousy is an emotion - all emotions are caused. But remember:

Jealous = something I have is likely to be taken away from me
Envy = something I want that I haven't got that someone else has

Most of the time people don't like it when things change. Even if that change is a supposedly positive thing.

Well it depends on the comments doesn't it?

I can't help feeling a lot of the time "She's just jealous hun", can be a bit of a cop out answer to some things.
